This past year has seen many UFC fighters getting in trouble with the law. The newest addition to this list is the UFC middleweight Sedriques Dumas. Authorities arrested him on Tuesday on a felony battery charge in Florida. The scheduled fight for March 30th of the 28-year-old fighter is now uncertain.
Late Monday, Dumas posted a video showing a confrontation with police officers. The TMZ acquired the video. The video started with Dumas conversing with the police about him just walking and not violating the peace. The conversation became heated as he tried to tell the officer to back off. That officer then started walking towards his house to check if everything was ok. The officer said they received a “disturbance call” from a woman claiming her boyfriend was banging on her door. Dumas denied being the woman’s boyfriend. The police then proceeded to arrest him.
This was not Dumas’ first brush with the law regarding domestic violence accusations. He was accused but not arrested after an altercation at a Florida bar in 2021. Dumas recently fought at UFC 294, headlined by Alexander Volkanovski vs. Islam Makhachev. He won his last two UFC fights to improve his record to 4-1 in the promotion. His March 30 opponent, Charles Byrd, is on a two-fight winning streak.
The UFC has faced criticism in recent years for its handling of fighters accused of domestic violence.
As Dumas heads to court next month while also slated for a high-profile bout, observers will closely watch how the UFC proceeds with him. For now, his immediate future remains uncertain on both the legal and professional front.
Sedriques Dumas is held in Jail with no bond for his release
Sedriques Dumas remains in Escambia County Jail after his Tuesday arrest on a felony battery charge. The 28-year-old was denied bond, meaning he will stay in jail until his March 5 court appearance. Authorities in Florida can hold suspects without bond if they are charged with a dangerous crime.
Details about the alleged incident leading to Dumas’ arrest remain limited. The arrest throws the promising striker’s fighting career into limbo. It might affect his next fight, which is just six weeks away. He was scheduled for a March 30 UFC bout against Charles Byrd. It is unknown if the UFC will postpone the fight until Dumas’ legal case plays out or replace him on the card.
UFC CEO Dana White has not publicly commented on Dumas’ arrest. It remains to be seen if the promotion will take disciplinary action or if it will let the legal process play out first. Dumas maintains his innocence but could face up to five years in prison if convicted.
