UFC CEO Dana White shocked the sports and entertainment worlds with an Instagram story. He claimed that Power Slap League attracted more views than any reel of pop superstar Taylor Swift. Power Slap is a controversial, defenseless sport that has already sparked debate among combat sports fans and critics.
Dana White’s comparison of its viewership with Taylor Swift’s shows the unexpected reach of the unconventional sport. Power Slap captivated a broad audience by challenging traditional fighting competition norms. Its straightforward brutality intrigued and concerned many. White attributes Power Slap’s success to its adrenaline-inducing action and novelty. Thus offering a unique experience from boxing or MMA.
Power Slap’s rising popularity comes amid controversies. Critics argue it glorifies violence without the skill or strategy of traditional martial arts. Moreover, it also raised concerns about participants’ long-term health. Interestingly, Power Slap’s audience includes both combat sports enthusiasts and fans of general viral content. Moreover, it also has a big social media presence, where match clips often go viral, driving its viewership growth.
Recently, Dana White was at UFC Austin, where the promotion had a record-breaking performance. In the main event, Arman Tsarukyan scored a quick knockout of Beneil Dariush. Jalin Turner set the stage for the main event with a quick KO over Bobby Green.
Dana White fought against his team to host the latest Fight Night in Austin, Texas
Texas was one of the states in the US that supported the UFC during the pandemic lockdown. After Florida and Nevada, it’s Texas, where the promotion hosted important events. Interestingly, the UFC team did not want UFC on ESPN: Dariush vs. Tsarukyan to be held in Texas.
However, White convinced his team otherwise. This is what he said about it at the press conference.
My team originally wanted to go somewhere else tonight, and I said, 'No, we're going to Austin, Texas.' They were concerned, saying, 'Well, Texas is good this year, you know. They'll probably end up in one of these games.' And we came here anyway. We broke the record: sellout, biggest sporting event ever.Dana White via UFC Austin post-fight press conference
White’s decision reaped benefits as the UFC made records at the Arena. The record-breaking event prompted White to give half a million in bonuses for the event. Only two more events are left for the UFC in 2024: a Fight Night and a PPV. Song Yadong and Chris Gutierrez headline Fight Night, whilst UFC 296, the final PPV of 2024, will be headlined by Colby Covington and Leon Edwards.
