UFC fighters undergo a rigorous regimen to build up their bodies and withstand heavy blows. But the sole undisputed nemesis they have is a case of staph infection. Many fighters have faced the onslaught of staphylococcus infection (or ‘staph’ simply). The promotion’s history is full of minacious battles between MMA fighters and staph. Concurrently, it might just have claimed a new victim – Nick Diaz.

Robert Whittaker, Mark Hunt, and even Dustin Poirier have had symptomatic boils and oozing blisters. After facing Michael Chandler at UFC 281, ‘The Diamond’ caught on a nasty case of staph during recovery. Now, Diaz gets into the supposed mix. The Strikeforce alum attended the UFC Vegas 85 at the UFC APEX in Las Vegas on Saturday night. A pre-fight snap of him seated has gone viral.

But what has piqued the attention of fight fans moreover, is his palm sporting an open wound. With 205lbs title contender Jiri Prochazka‘s latest staph reveal for UFC 295, sentiments are running wry within the fanbase. With the essence of it being a full-on-touch enabled combat sport, the practice of hiding staph is chided upon. Diaz’s supposed staph has thus garnered much traction.

Respect to the legend he's a real one, but cover up that abomination of a wound on your hand why's it just exposed like that?

In recent history, top honcho, Dana White blasted two fighters for hiding out their staph and appearing on the UFC 294 card. These were Russian strawweight, Victoria Dudakova and Mike Breeden. Nick Diaz’s case, however, has attracted a lighter undertone of the sentiment.

Diaz (26-10 MMA, 7-7 UFC) last fought at UFC 266 against Robbie Lawler. But, even away from active participation, the fighter commands much respect from his fandom.

However, he was visibly sporting an open wound on his palm at the event. Here’s how the fight bubble reacted to it –

Staph infection holds a high chance of spreading through touch, especially within the scope of contact sports. While Diaz might be out of the game for a while, the infection is still receptive to those currently fighting.

Fans do not go easy when it comes to such cases.185lber, Paulo Costa had attracted much fan sneer for pulling out of UFC 294. It was only later when his girlfriend, Tamara Alves, revealed close-up snaps of his chronic infection that fans believed him.

Accordingly, Diaz’s fans have reacted the same way, urging him to cover up the wound on how. A plethora of fans have reacted similarly, over and over, only speaking to the gravity of the disease.
