UFC hall of Famer, Rashad Evans recalls the heartbreaking experience of witnessing Kamaru Usman‘s vicious KO loss at UFC 278 last weekend. Evans was in the first row with the former champion’s family at the Vivint Arena in Utah.

Usman was taking on Leon Edwards in a rematch at UFC 278. Going into the fight the former champion was on a 15-fight winning streak and had a win over the challenger in their first meeting in 2015. This was his sixth time defending his title. The champion suffered his first loss in the UFC and the second loss of his carrier since 2013 at the hands of Edwards.

Although going into the fifth round it looked like another successful title defence for the champion. He was dominating the fight and was winning on the scorecard with a huge margin. However, his title run was cut short by the challenger when he landed a head kick that sent the champion face first on the canvas. The KO came when there were 56seconds left in the fight.

Rashan Evans recalls the devastating experience of witnessing the KO. The UFC vet has a long history with the former champion. He considers himself his big brother. Their relationship goes back to when Rashad was mentoring the former champion while with the Blackzilians in South Florida.

Evans was in the front row with Kamaru‘s family for the main event. He recalls the horror they felt witnessing the dominant champion getting KO’d in front of his daughter and family. The Nigerian was set to tie Anderson Silva for a 16-fight winning streak in the UFC going into the fight.

Usman and Evans’s relationship goes back to the day he was mentoring the former champion during his TUF days. The UFC vet considers himself a brother to the former champion. The relationship made it hard for Evans to witness Usman getting KO’d so viciously.

In an interview with Mortal Kombat, after less than 48 hours of the UFC 278, the UFC vet opened up about the experience of witnessing the former champion getting knocked out in front of friends and family.

Evans explained, “But just being there was unbelievable, because I’m sitting right next to his family, and his daughter’s right next to me, When that whole thing happens, you just hear this scream, and it was just kind of very traumatic. For me, being like a brother to Kamaru, just watching him go down like that, and it just made me real sick.”

The real-time reaction of the former P4P king getting KO’d in the main event was also captured by the camera. The reactions showed the disbelief of spectators witnessing what just unfolded in front of them.
