Former UFC champion Robert Whittaker was full of praise for UFC Hall of Famer Georges St-Pierre. He even picked St-Pierre to defeat the undefeated former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. Here is what happened:
Robert Whittaker recently sat down for an interview with MMArcade. There he told host Jonny how good and well-rounded of a fighter Georges St-Pierre was. When asked about who would he pick between GSP and Nurmagomedov, his answer was straight:
I think prime GSP beats Khabib. I think GSP's much more well-rounded, I think he's got the wrestling and the jiu-jitsu to kind of take away a lot of Nurmagomedov's strengths. Yeah, GSP was really good man.Robert Whittaker via MMArcade
Whittaker called him a safe fighter because of his skill set. He described how the former welterweight champion would adapt according to his opponents’ strengths and weaknesses. The host then went on to bring up the age-old comparison that has plagued the credibility of Khabib’s undefeated record. Georges St-Pierre went throughout his MMA career with only two losses. They were against Matt Hughes and Matt Serra who are two of the most well respected and formidable fighters in UFC history.
Meanwhile, the people Khabib fought were as many would argue, not of that calibre. Also, St-Pierre defended his title nine times right until he retired. Meanwhile, Khabib defended his title thrice against Dustin Poirier, Conor McGregor, and Justin Gaethje.
Robert Whittaker on the eye-poking in the Chris Weidman vs. Bruno Silva fight
UFC Atlantic City was an interesting fight. There were not only one but multiple eye pokes in that card and Bruno Silva almost lost vision in one of his eyes.
‘The Reaper’ had an interesting take on the incident. Whittaker started by saying that he is a big fan of Chris Weidman and that eye pokes do happen in fights. That said, Whittaker found it hilarious how Weidman poked Silva’s eyes twice in a matter of seconds and later completely owned up to it on social media while still trolling Silva. He said the ruling was not his part of the job but he did find the entire situation pretty funny.
Justin Gaethje was incensed by these eye-pokes and even criticized the UFC for not changing the old gloves. According to the ‘Human Highlight’, there are better alternatives to the UFC gloves, which can completely prevent such things from ever happening in the sport.
Weidman and Silva’s fight last month went the full distance. It ultimately ended with a unanimous decision victory in favor of Weidman. However, this win was marred by controversy because of the eye poke. Many people noticed that Weidman extended his fingers with open hands, potentially causing the eye pokes. John McCarthy commented on the incident, saying that Weidman’s eye pokes were intentional.
