Sean O'Malley wants to take on Marlon Vera after UFC 292 win

Sean O’Malley‘s remarkable victory at UFC 292 has marked a new beginning in the Bantamweight division. He created his highlight moment with a spectacular TKO in the second round of his fight against Aljamain Sterling. This put an end to Sterling’s long reign in the UFC Bantamweight division. Boston’s TD Garden arena marked the beginning of Sean O’Malley’s reign in the division.

The new champion has already set his eyes on his next opponent, Marlon Vera. During the post-fight press conference, O’Malley contemplated the possibility of facing Marlon Vera on the UFC’s final card in 2023. The two have faced each other before. Thus, a win could potentially lead to a trilogy fight. However, O’Malley had a distinct perspective on his first encounter with Marlon Vera.

O’Malley termed Vera’s demeanor bothersome, describing him as humorless, peculiarly dressed, and visually unappealing. “He’s not funny, (but) tries to be. He’s so ugly. He dresses like an idiot. It’s like, ‘God, do I really have to give this guy an opportunity?’,” O’Malley said. However, he recognized the financial incentive the bout has to offer.

The 28-year-old dismissed his prior loss to Vera, attributing it to a case of ‘drop foot’. To him, that particular fight has no place in his undefeated record, now standing at 18-0. “When I count my record of 18-0 now, that ‘Chito’ fight is not even on there… The Sugar State Athletic Commission completely cleared that of everything. That fight never even happened.”

Despite his previous loss to Vera, Sean O’Malley regards a potential rematch as an opportunity for payback, given their history of verbal jousting and rivalry. Following his victory, O’Malley quickly shifted his focus to his first title defense, scheduled for December in Las Vegas.

Marlon Vera’s recent triumph over Pedro Munhoz in Massachusetts presents a compelling narrative for O’Malley’s next bout. With Henry Cejudo sidelined due to injury and Cory Sandhagen recovering from surgery, O’Malley’s path to redemption against Vera seems clear. O’Malley suffered his first career loss to Marlon Vera at UFC 252 back in 2020.

However, the 28-year-old doesn’t perceive it as a quest for revenge. From his perspective, there’s no previous loss to avenge, setting the stage for an intriguing showdown between two formidable bantamweight contenders.
