‘Obviously didn’t mean it’- Sean O’Malley reveals his post-fight interaction with Pedro Munhoz, suggests a solution to prevent eye pokes
Sean O'Malley
Sean O’Malley’s mind might be in a very tough place considering the frustration of not being able to secure a win and not losing the bout either. O’Malley’s battle against Pedro Munhoz at UFC 276’s opening matchup of the main card ended up as a no-contest after being an accidental eye poke. O’Malley is now 8-1 with a no-contest attached as well in his UFC career.
The UFC 276 fight card took place in T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas. Other than the aforementioned fight, in the main event, Israel Adesanya defeated Jared Cannonier via a unanimous decision to defend the middleweight championship. Alexander Volkanovski retained his featherweight belt in a trilogy against Max Holloway, a rivalry that has been cemented as 3-0 in the champion’s favour.
Sean O’Malley is not fond of the current structure of UFC gloves
In a post-fight media scrum, O’Malley talked about Munhoz’s reluctance to continue the fight only to get away, his reaction to the judges’ scorecards of the first round, his next step as a fighter and much more. In the midst of all, O’Malley also talked about his post-fight interaction with Munhoz inside the Octagon and what did he say to the veteran bantamweight. Along with this, O’Malley spoke about a very important suggestion in fight gear.
“I was just saying you know I respect him,” says Sean O’Malley “Obviously everyone I fight, I respect. I was just saying I don’t know how bad the eye poke was. Like I can imagine being not too bad and him not just fighting so I said I am sorry like, obviously didn’t mean to do that…
We got to figure out something with those gloves because when you’re wearing those gloves they almost make your hands, like, want to open. You have to like really try to make a fist so if we just have gloves that kind of force you hand to make a fist, I think that would help a lot,” concludes O’Malley.
What did you make of the no-contest decision? Who do you think is next for O’Malley? Running it back against Munhoz will be quite an option but fighters like Adrian Yanez would always welcome O’Malley back to the octagon as soon as possible, which is what O’Malley would want due to no injuries and a frustrating result. Fans must understand that each fight fluctuates a fighter’s stock as a valid brand in the business based on which his/her future pursues are moderated.
