When Islam Makhachev credits the former lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov for his generous treatment and hospitality, he wasn’t lying. “The Eagle” has given his all to see Makhachev become the lightweight champion of the UFC.
At UFC 280, Islam Makhachev made “father’s plan” come true as he fulfilled his own and also Khabib Nurmagomedov’s wish by beating Charles Oliveira in the main event. Makhachev’s win against Oliveira to become the lightweight champion meant a lot for Nurmagomedov. It has always been The Eagle’s wish to see his friend wrap the lightweight belt around him.
During the walkout of Islam Makhachev to the octagon in the title fight, commentator Daniel Cormier revealed that Team Khabib spent nearly $1 million to help Makhachev prepare for Charles Oliveira. Islam and his team flew to Dubai weeks before the fight night and have been training in top facilities. Makhachev, himself has said many times that Khabib has never shied away from helping him out.
Ever since his retirement, Nurmagomedov has been spending most of his time helping his team achieve their goals in mixed martial arts. Nurmagomedov’s investment paid off as Makhachev became the undisputed lightweight champion in Abu Dhabi. Very rarely do you get to see friends like Khabib and Islam in the world of combat sports.

After his victory, Makhachev decided to invite his friend to the post-fight octagon interview and share a few words. While talking to Daniel Cormier, Khabib Nurmagomedov explained, now that Makhachev has become the world’s best lightweight, the next plan is to become the pound-for-pound best fighter.
“22 years we trained together, and the last couple of years, I told you guys, Islam Makhachev is the best fighter. Not in lightweight, he’s the pound-for-pound number one fighter right now, today,” said Nurmagomedov. The number one P4P king, Alexander Volkanovski who was sitting right there, octagon-side got a special call-out from “The Eagle” himself.
“It’s our plan to fly all the way to Australia and fight in pound-for-pound king’s backyard. Volkanovski, let’s do it. We know we’re gonna finish this guy,” said Nurmagomedov pointing to Alexander “The Great” Volkanovski.
