UFC veteran Chael Sonnen is known to be a tough contender in the octagon. The American fighter’s outspoken and humorous personality has earned him respect over the years. Throughout his career, he has stepped into the octagon against notable fighters and emerged victorious. Fighters like Michael Bisping have tasted defeat at the hands of the ‘American Gangster.’ Amassing a record of 29 wins and 15 losses in his profession UFC career, the fighter is considered to be a veteran in the sport.

Throughout his career, Sonnen has seemed unapologetic toward his opponents. His fearless behavior and trash talk have been noted to be a tough road for his opponents. The witty personality that he possesses has won him exchanges in press conferences. However, in his retirement days, Chael Sonnen reveals it all. In a podcast with comedian Andrew Schulz, the fighter revealed a fighter he was afraid of.

“There’s been sometimes when I’ve left the locker room and known I was a lamb going to slaughter. I did not think I was gonna beat Jon Jones the night that I fought him,” said Chael Sonnen as he surprises the host. He continued, “That was just a hard one where I just watched him and go ‘Man, that guy is good.’ And, It was okay to look up to Jon. It was okay to admire Jon ’cause I was in a different weight class.”

Jon Jones is arguably the best fighter in the UFC. The fighter has racked up several wins in his career despite his controversies. His last fight against Ciryl Gane cemented to be a spectacular heavyweight contender and the greatest of all time.

Following the victory against heavyweight contender Ciryl Gane, Jon Jones was regarded as a top fighter. Fans and critics named him the G.O.A.T. (Greatest of all Time). However, his opponent Chael Sonnen was not impressed by his performance.

“This guy [Jon Jones] will whip somebody’s a**. This guy is a real talent. I’m comparing him to Jon Jones,” said Chael Sonnen. He indicated that ‘Bones’ performance against Gane was lackluster compared to his other fights. He then continued, “I think it might’ve been the clumsiest I’ve seen Jon Jones. I think it might’ve been the loosest his body looks.”

Chael Sonnen also said, “I know we try not to judge too much but it means something. There’s a reason we face these guys off. Jon Jones is in a weight class, And maybe it didn’t apply to this opponent. [Ciryl Gane] But, he’s 22 pounds under the limit. I think there are some things to look at.” Sonnen went on to list his wrestling skills in the fight.

“Nobody was more surprised he got that takedown than him. He’s a pretty good wrestler. That was not great wrestling and it just happened to work,” said Chael Sonnen about Jon Jones’ victory at UFC 285.
