The UFC’s pound-for-pound rankings have long been the subject of scrutiny and debate in the MMA community. The UFC lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev, has found himself at the center of attention due to recent controversial remarks made by none other than Ali Abdelaziz, the former manager of Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Makhachev squared off against Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 284. Despite emerging victorious in that bout, Makhachev found himself ranked third in the pound-for-pound list. This development drew a strong reaction from his manager, Ali Abdelaziz. In a recent tweet, Abdelaziz expressed his discontent with the rankings. He questioned how Makhachev could have fought and won against the number one pound-for-pound fighter and yet be ranked third. In his tweet, he stated, “@MAKHACHEVMMA Islam Makhachev was #2 P4P, fought the #1 P4P for his ranking, won and now he’s P4P #3 These rankings are bullshit“.
Jon Jones currently ranks #1 in the UFC pound-for-pound rankings. However, he is not quite keen on maintaining the spot. In fact, Jones has bigger goals in mind. Earlier this year, Jon Jones made his UFC comeback and secured the heavyweight title. Soon, he will fight his first title defense in an upcoming clash with Stipe Miocic at UFC 295.
Islam Makhachev’s next fight is a thrilling rematch against former rival Charles Oliveira. The fight is scheduled to take place at UFC 294, and the duo will headline the main event this October in Abu Dhabi.
Islam Makhachev disagrees with Jon Jones being the top pound-for-pound fighter
Islam Makhachev shares the same sentiments as his manager, Ali Abdelaziz. In an earlier interview with Daniel Cormier, Islam addressed this issue. “This is bulls***, brother,” Makhachev told Cormier. He urged that he is not just the lightweight champion but the “pound-for-pound best fighter”.
Jon Jones has a highly exciting matchup against Stipe Miocic that will unfold at the Madison Square Garden. Many believe Jon Jones holds the upper hand in this fight. However, Miocic expressed in a recent interview that he has no intentions of losing. He warned Jon Jones’s fans that they may regret their bets on the heavyweight champion. “I think I have a great IQ… I’ll figure out a way out,” he said.
As UFC 295 approaches, the anticipation has reached a fever pitch. Fans eagerly anticipate the clash between the two heavyweight titans. Miocic’s unwavering self-assurance promises an enthralling contest where the outcome remains shrouded in uncertainty.
