A Bantamweight matchup between former 135lbs champ Cody Garbrandt and Rani Yahya was scheduled for July 9th at UFC Vegas 58 However, the fight was scrapped following Yahya’s neck injury during training. Both the fighters agreed to re-book the match.
Cody Garbrandt is currently on a 2 fight-losing streak. After dropping his title at the hands of his rival T.J Dillashaw in 2017, No Love is on a losing skid. He is 1-5 in his last six outings after he captured the bantamweight crown. In December last year, the former champ tried his hands at Flyweight. He lost via TKO at the hands of top 125lbs prospect Kai Kara-France at UFC 269. Garbrandt has been finished in four of his five losses. His record currently stands at 12-5.
On the other hand, Yahya is a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioner. In April 2007 he has won the 66 kg division of the prestigious ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship. He is currently on a 2 fight win streak. Yahya’s last loss was at the hands of Ricky Simon at UFC 23. After that, he is 2-0-1 in his last three outings. His records currently stand at 28-10-1-1. The Brazilian continues to hang in the bantamweight division, despite being a long-time vet who competed in the WEC back in 2007.
Will Cody Garbrandt be able to bounce back into the win column again?
After the cancellation of their original booking fell through due to Yahya suffering a neck injury during training. The UFC has re-booked the fight for October 1 event. The venue for the event will be a UFC Fight Night event in Las Vegas. The event is scheduled to be headlined by top strawweight contenders as Mackenzie Dern fights Yan Xiaonan.
The rescheduling of the July 9 matchup between the two bantamweights for October 1 was first reported by MMA Mania. Both fighters confirmed the rescheduled date on social media following the report. Yahya and Garbrandt are currently unranked in the 135lbs division.
When the fight was originally announced many fans believed that the former champion has been given a turnaround matchup. Rani is one of the few UFC vets who have no knockouts to his name. While Garbrandt has lost four of his five matches via Ko or TKO.
