The most recent victim of ‘robbery’ accusations, Sean O’Malley, has weighed in on the recent Islam Makhachev vs Alexander Volkanovski results. According to him, the fight was really close and he wouldn’t want to be in the judge’s position.
UFC 284 main event Makhachev vs Volkanovski has given rise to multiple debates as to who won the fight and who deserves the P4P #1 ranking. There are some instances when people say it’s Islam’s position and there are some who say that it’s Alexander’s.
“The first round goes to Islam and the last round goes to Vokanovski, but the other rounds it’s very difficult”, said O’Malley. According to him, it was really difficult to score in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rounds since it could be either of them. And weighs in on how Volkanovski would’ve felt since he put on the burners late. And also said that if Alexander had another 30 to 60 seconds, it would’ve been his win for sure.
The scoring could indeed have gone either way. With people’s debate on who actually should hold the P4P #1 going wild, the ranking has been made such that both the fighters are ranked number 1. This leaves them with an opportunity for a rematch, which Volkanovski wants immediately. So it’ll be interesting to see how the rematch goes.
The Sean O’Malley vs Petr Yan controversy
Sean O’Malley managed to win the biggest fight in his career when he secured a split decision win against Petr Yan at UFC 280. But the win was such that his previous controversies don’t hold a candle to it.
When O’Malley won a split decision against Yan, he was discredited by the MMA community by saying that Yan was robbed of his win. People think that O’Malley was good, but not good enough to actually win the fight.
Though these calls were loud, they didn’t last for long since the very next robbery controversy was the Paddy Pimblett vs Jared Gordon fight, which people thought Gordon won, but the win was given to Pimblett. These calls have always been made in close fights therefore it’s better to trust the judge’s decision in such cases.
