Ariel Helwani and Chael Sonnen discuss scenario for Nate Diaz fighting Leon Edwards for the tile

Nate Diaz is arguably one of the two biggest cult superstars in the UFC right now, alongside old nemesis Conor McGregor. The Stockton native is known for his brazen and unbothered attitude. He and his older brother Nick Diaz have captured the attention and enthralled audiences collectively for more than a decade now.

To say that a Nate Diaz fight is a spectacle is no overstatement. The fireworks start flying even before the fighter steps into the octagon- Diaz has some of the most infamous press conferences and weigh-in clips of all time. Cue him and his team throwing bottles at Conor McGregor during his press conference, or recently, him offering Mexican Brandon Moreno a blunt last year.

What makes Diaz so special is his ardent refusal to play up to the UFC’s narrative, choosing to define his own course. He is as authentic as they come, and recently, he has also become vocal about the problems he and other fighters face. Diaz is the ordinary man’s favorite fighter and “Your favorite fighter’s favorite fighter.” His fights against Conor McGregor, Jorge Masvidal, and Anthony Pettis will live on in the fans’ hearts.

To say that we have been robbed of seeing Nate Diaz as much as we could have in recent times is again no overstatement. With a bittersweet feeling within, fans will see the 35-year-old face juggernaut Khamzat Chimaev in the last fight of his UFC contract. In a bid to explore greener pastures, Diaz will most probably not renew his contract

Nate Diaz stuns Leon Edwards at UFC 263

We saw Diaz’s last fight in 2021, where despite getting dominated by Edwards most of the fight, he stunned the Welterweight champion in the last minute. However, Leon hung on, to win the fight 49-46 in all the referees’ eyes.

MMA is a fascinating sport – one of the two most dominant champions of a division could be dominating another fighter for the duration of the whole fight, but all it takes is one head-kick for his lights to be shut out. Kamaru Usman found out this brutal, yet fascinating fact about MMA first-hand at UFC 278, losing via KO to Leon Edwards.

Diaz stunned “Rocky” in the last round, and “Rocky” stunned and finished Kamaru Usman in the last. This created a frenzied scenario in the Welterweight division, shaking up a division that needed a rejig. Now that “Rocky’s” the champion, everyone would love to see Nate Diaz be given the title shot against him, to send a legend off in the way that he deserves to be sent off.

On Ariel Helwani’s MMA Hour, the Canadian journalist and ex-UFC Middleweight Chael Sonnen sat down to discuss a hypothetical situation where Diaz goes on to challenge Edwards for the belt. First, he will have to beat soon-to-be title contender Chimaev. “What if Nate Diaz wins this? What if Nate Diaz has one more left in the chamber?” Sonnen speculated to Helwani and his viewers. If this does happen, then Dana White might offer Nate $20 million to fight Leon Edwards in England, according to Helwani.

Diaz has no plans to renew his contract, trying instead to challenge Jake Paul to a boxing fight, which would guarantee a much larger paycheck for him. It all sounds positive, but if Diaz manages to beat the terrifying Chimaev, then we might expect yet another Weltwerweight shakedown.

Whatever happens, inside, we are all Diaz fans. So too is Chael, who expressed this in a now-deleted tweet, saying “Nate Diaz is World Champion.”
