The UFC featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski is on a 12-fight win streak in the UFC. Volkanovski will be looking to score a victory to achieve the double champion feat and retain his #1 spot in the P4P rankings.

The difference in physicality between the two fighters is enormous. Volkanovski stands at 5ft 6 inches with 72 inches in reach while Makhachev stands at 5ft 10 inches with a similar reach. With 4 inches advantage in terms of height, Makhachev would find it easier to close the distance whereas Volkanovski would have to depend on his speed to create distance.

How will physiological differences between Volkanovski and Makhachev play out in the super-fight?

2016 World Combat Sambo wrestling champion and current UFC lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev is a man of many accolades. Having recently acquired the UFC world title by defeating Charles Oliveira, Makhachev stands as the P4P #2 fighter in the UFC.

Makhachev, like many other Dagestani fighters, is known for making brutal weight cuts before fights. Walking around at 190 lbs, Makhachev cuts 30-40 lbs to make weight. This means that the Dagestani champion possesses power similar to middleweight fighters. And a height of 5ft 10 inches makes him physically the most ideal fighter for the lightweight division.

Taller fighters often have an advantage over shorter opponents due to their physical ability to close distance and fight dirty in clinch situations. However, Volkanovski’s featherweight physique makes him much faster than most lightweights. With a background in rugby, Volkanovski has a larger body frame.

Thus, Volkanovski is no less than Makhachev in terms of generating power. But the wrestling credentials weigh heavier on Makhachev’s side. The super-fight carries a lot of importance and will determine the future of the lightweight division. UFC 284 will take place this Sunday, February 12 in Perth, Australia.
