“Whooped my ass” – When a retired NBA star beat up UFC light heavyweight Ryan Spann

Ryan Spann just made the light heavyweight headlines after his enchanting KO finish over former contender Dominick Reyes at UFC 281. The victory over Reyes boosts Span’s chances of becoming a household name in the light heavyweight division.

That being said, fans would be surprised to know that he was once pieced up by former NBA player Deron Williams in a sparring bout. For context, this wasn’t a hostile fight, as Spann trains out of Williams’s gym.

Speaking about it, he said, “Deron whooped my ass one day. I’m dead serious. You can call him and ask him. I was training for a fight, and coach was like, ‘Deron, get in.’ And, I already knew he hooped, and I knew who he was, but I never got to go with him.

He continued, “I think it was my 2nd or my 3rd round with a fresh body, and you put Deron in, I was like, ‘Oh s**t, nice, I get a round off.’… It wasn’t until Deron was on top of me and me struggling to get up, and coach gonna look at me and say ‘I’ve been working with him for the last couple of years. You thought you were gonna get this round off?’”

To say that Spann was in for a surprise would be a gross understatement. However, we are sure the experience has become lore at the gym Spann trains out of.

Ryan Spann is a legitimate 205-pound prospect. He is just a few wins shy of entering the upper echelons of the rankings. As mentioned-above, his devastating KO win over Dominick Reyes set a lot of eyes on him. The truth of the matter is that, despite coming in 0-3 in his last 3 fights, Dominick Reyes is still a fantastic fighter. Only two years back, he was contending and almost won the light heavyweight belt off Jon Jones. The fashion in which he fell to the canvas shows how powerful Spann is.

After his fight, Ryan Spann delivered one of the most intriguing interviews, to which even Joe Rogan, who has seen and done it all, showed surprise. He said, “I literally trained, I have never trained for a fight before.

If Spann made such an improvement after one well-executed fight camp, fans will wait to see what else he has in store. Ranked #10 in the light heavyweight rankings, with a vast array of potential match-ups ahead of him (including a potential rematch against Anthony Smith), “Superman” can potentially begin a quick rise to the top of the rankings.
