Yan Xiaonan is a UFC fighter hailing from China. She competes in the strawweight division and rose in popularity over the years. The fighter amasses a record of 16 wins and three losses in her professional career. She has collected noticeable wins over strong contenders like Claudia Gadelha and Syuri Kondo. Prior to signing with the UFC, ‘Fury Nine’ had a successful MMA career in various other organizations. Yan is well known for her brutal striking skills which have earned the respect of her opponents.

The fighter is also known to represent her country and origins. Hailing from Liaoning, China, she has a sense of respect for her upbringing. In early 2021, Yan Xiaonan criticized strawweight contender Rose Namajunas for her comments on communism. The Communist Party of China is known to have a significant presence in the country with a lot of believers in the ideology. Although Yan has not taken a stand on her beliefs, she felt disrespected by Rose Namajunas’ comments.

Ahead of her bout against Zhang Weili, Rose Namajunas had made certain comments against communism that made the rounds. This was considered disrespectful by a lot of her fans as well as Yan Xiaonan. ‘Fury Nine’ had this to say about it in an interview, “We are different, we have different thoughts. Everybody can have her or his own thoughts.” “She can say what she wants but she cannot change anything,” said Yan Xiaonan.

Nicknamed the ‘Thug,’ she said the phrase, ‘It’s better dead than red.’ This slogan is an expression used by anti-communists that started in the 1950s.

These comments were followed by a lot of backlash toward the fighter. She was asked by popular MMA journalist Ariel Helwani about her stance on the ideology after the media frenzy. Nonetheless, Namajunas made it clear that her belief had not changed despite the hate comments she received.
