Colby Covington is one of the most, if not the most polarizing figures in MMA – when not taunting his opponents in the cage, the American chooses to go at them in press conferences, or other such media obligations.
Despite whatever is made of Covington, one thing is for sure – he is nothing but a great fighter. Coined by many as the second greatest welterweight around right now, Covington has been able to dispatch of some of the best fighters in the 170 pounds divisions, and for the most part, with relative ease.
Hence, when asked if he would like to take on an Irishman by the name of Conor McGregor, he said, “I mean I would, but he’s not gonna fight someone where he knows there’s a zero percent chance to win. There’s no luck factor, like he can’t even hit lightning in a bottle. Realistically, I beat that guy 10/10 times, if we are talking statistically, you know? And life is all about numbers.”
Although a Colby Covington – Conor McGregor is unlikely at this point, it must never be ruled out. With the Irishman due to return at some point next year, his bulked up physique has made it exceedingly clear that he won’t be able to compete at lightweight anymore. That leaves welterweight – if things play out in the right fashion, we could see “The Notorious” vs. “Chaos” at some point.
A brief look at Colby Covington’s UFC resume
Colby Covington is primarily a wrestler – hence, all of his opponents try and inundate him with their striking. Such was the case with Jorge Masvidal, who attempted and even briefly dropped his adversary for a brief moment, only for him to recover and put his famous wrestling pressure back on.
Thus, Covington’s wrestling prowess has brought him a lot of success in his career. Making his debut against Anying Wang, Covington won a further two fights before being choked out by Warrley Alves in 2015. However, from there on, he went on an unprecedented seven fight win streak, that also saw him become the interim champion.
Despite beating the likes of Robbie Lawler, Bryan Barberena and Demian Maia, Covington’s story has been defined by his decisive losses to one of the two greatest welterweights In history, Kamaru Usman. However, there is a new champion in town, and it feels like everything is up for grabs in the division.
