Walkouts in the UFC are supposed to be the last appetizer before the main course finally is delivered to the fans’ tables – that is, the fight itself. Hence, the point of a walkout is to enthuse fans and build hype at the last moment.
There are a lot of fighters who set the tone for their fight using the kind of music they walk out to and also the kind of atmosphere they are able to create within the octagon. Prime among them are superstars like Conor McGregor, Israel Adesanya and now, Paddy Pimblett. However, in the video attached below, things took a downward turn, and Matt Brown, the fighter in question, had his whole walkout soured due to the detrimental actions of a single fan.
To provide a bit of context to the incident – Matt Brown had been booked to fight Brazilian icon Demian Maia in his own backyard (that is, Curitiba in Brazil). As is the case with Brazilian crowds, they are incredibly loyal to their fighters. One need only hark back to Jose Aldo being hosted by the Rio De Janeiro crowd after his title win.
Hence, as a result of protest of his questionable actions during the weigh-ins, wherein he flipped off the Brazilian faithful, three fans took matters into their own hands and hit the octagon-boundBrown. The third instance angered Brown so much, that he had to vent it out by punching the unruly fan in question.
A look at Matt Brown’s exceptionally long career in the UFC
Despite the taunting tactic that he employed in Curitiba, Brown’s night would end in despair as he would end up losing via submission to the crowd favourite Maia. At the beginning of the third round, Brown found himself embroiled in the clutches of the proficient BJJ practitioner, who then fashioned a rear naked choke to end his American counterpart’s night.
Just as the event was a hit and a miss for Matt Brown, his career also taken a similar trajectory, ever since he entered the promotion. At 41, he is 23-29, which means his win: loss ratio is effectively 1:1. His last fight was against Bryan Barberena, against whom he lost via split decision.

Although Brown has never really been able to make a dent in the rankings, the American has fought the likes of Carlos Condit, Diego Sanchez, Donald Cerrone and Stephen Thompson. He might not have come close to the top of the rankings, but he did take on some stellar talent in his 14 year stint in the company. It will be interesting to see how long the 41-year-old decides to continue, with the welterweight division teeming with incoming talent.
