Dan Hooker talks about being a featherweight

Dan Hooker returns to action this weekend but as a featherweight. After proving himself in the lightweight division for more than six years, the Kiwi fighter has decided to move down to a weight class.

UFC fan-favorite Dan Hooker made a decision to fight in the featherweight division 2-3 in the lightweight division and lose to some of the top guys in the division. Hooker believes his time came to go back to cutting weight and now will be facing the exciting Arnold Allen in this week’s UFC Fight Night that is going to be held in London.

Ahead of his amazing fight, Dan makes an appearance on The MMA Hour hosted by Ariel Helwani and talks about his decision to return to the 145-lb division. “This is my weight class. One hundred percent, without a shadow of a doubt,” said Dan talking to Ariel Helwani. “I’ve not even gone to the stepping on the scales but this is my weight class.”

Despite the fact that Hooker cannot enjoy his life eating, the fighter from New Zealand believes he would like to stay in the featherweight division. “It requires another level of sacrifice. It requires another level of dedication that 155 doesn’t demand of me,” said Dan on the MMA Hour. “This is why it is the best weight class for me because to compete at 145, I have to be 100 percent laser-focused.”

Dan also says he has much faster than he ever was and believes this could act in his favor during fights. “This camp, without a doubt has been challenging. But without a shadow of a doubt, it has brought out the best in me and has made me develop and grow at a greater speed than I could ever do at 155.”

Dan has a record of 21-11-0 in his MMA career. The fighter is coming off a short-notice fight defeat to top lightweight contender Islam Makhachev at UFC 267. His last win in the octagon comes against Nasrat Haqparast at UFC 266. Watch Dan’s full interview with Ariel Helwani below:
