UFC Fight Night Rozenstruik vs Sakai

UFC Fight Night Rozenstruik vs Sakai is headlined by heavyweights Jairzinho Rozenstruik and Augusto Sakai. Rozenstruik would be fancying getting back into the top of the heavyweight ladder after suffering 2 losses in his last 3 fights. But before that, we had the prelims which kicked things off.

Lightweight: Claudi Puelles vs Jordan Leavitt

Round 1:

Both the fighters began the round by trading leg kicks. Leavitt then executed a takedown successfully but Puelles got back to his feet in no time. Leavitt looked eager to take the fight to the ground, but was not able to do so as Puelles kept repelling him. With a few minutes left, Puelles attempted a takedown, but was thwarted. The round ended with Leavitt landing a few hammer fists. 10-9 Leavitt

Round 2:

Both the fighters once again began the round, trading a few kicks. Leavitt then attempted a takedown. He then followed it up with a heel hook attempt. But Puelles evaded it, and landed a few big strikes on Leavitt. Puelles ended the round with a few more short strikes. 10-9 Puelles

Round 3:

Fight went to the ground right in the beginning. Puelles got to work quite quickly. He secured the top position and landed a few strikes. Things didn’t seem to work out that well for Leavitt in this round. Puelles once again took the fight to the ground, and landed a few strikes on a helpless Puelles. They traded a few punches before the bell. 10-9 Puelles

Winner: Claudio Pelles def. Jordan Leavitt via. unanimous decision (29-28 x3)

Featherweight: Sean Woodson vs Youssef Zalal

Round 1:

Woodson took the center and looked to strike. Zalal landed a clean left. Woodson pumped a long jab, but Zalal was evasive. Zalal then attempted a takedown, but failed. Woodson then landed a clean right. 10-9 Zalal

Round 2:

Woodson was the aggressor in the second round. Zalal then switched on. Zalal then moved in and countered the jab. Zalal followed it up with a right jab. Woodson landed a nice knee after a while. Towards the end of the round Woodson went for a guillotine but Zalal somehow saw off until the end of the round. 10-9 Woodson

Round 3:

Woodson began sharply. They traded several shots. Woodson landed a few elbows but didn’t cause significant damage. Jab for Woodson. A frenzy end to the round, as they traded plenty of shots towards the end of the round. 10-9 Woodson

Winner: Sean Woodson def. Youssef Zalal via. split decision (28-29, 29-28, 29-28)

Women’s Flyweight: Manon Fiorot vs Tabatha Ricci

Round 1:

Ricci being 6 inches short struggled to find her range. Fiorot landed several side kicks, with a few strong ones to Ricci’s body. Fiorot continued keeping Ricci at baby due to her superior reach and size. Ricci then attempted a few takedowns, but she was unsuccessful. With a few minutes left Fiorot landed a good combination rocking Ricci. Ricci however stood firm on her feet. 10-9 Fiorot

Round 2:

Fiorot started off the second round from where she left in the first round. This time Fiorot landed more clean strikes. The strikes began connecting, but didn’t exactly rock Ricci. But, halfway into the round, Fiorot landed a flurry of punches to knock out Ricci and hand her, the first loss in her MMA career.

Lightweight: Mason Jones vs Alan Patrick

Round 1

The first round was absolutely wild. Patrick started swinging wildly in the beginning and connected with a few strikes, including a spinning back elbow. As time went by Patrick started tiring, and Jones began gaining the upper hand. With a few minutes left Jones went absolutely wild. He took Patrick to the ground and threw some hefty punches and elbows. Patrick was badly hurt, but somehow saw it until the end of the round. 10-9 Mason Jones

Round 2

Jones began the second round strongly. He landed a few blows on a grounded Patrick. Once Patrick got up, Jones accidentally eye-poked Patrick. The referee waved off the fight. After a small delay, the fight was deemed a no-contest.

Featherweight: Makwan Amirkhani vs. Kamuela Kirk

Round 1:

Not much of action for quite a while, with both the fighters landing a few strikes. Amirkhani then executed an absolutely stunning takedown, throwing Kirk with a suplex. He then followed it up with another takedown and maintained ground control for quite a while. Towards the end of the round, Kirk landed some shots. 10-9 Amirkhani

Round 2:

Kirk was more confident in this round. He was striking clean. A massive punch from Kirk landed. However, the fight went to the ground once again. Kirk used it to his advantage this time. He almost caught Amirkhani with an armbar, but Amirkhani somehow found his way out. The round clearly belonged to Kirk. 10-9 Kirk

Round 3:

Both the fighters appeared tired. After a while Amirkhani took the fight to the ground. However, he couldn’t cause much damage to Kirk. Kirk then turned the tide to his favour landing a couple of good strikes. Not much of action in this round. 10-9 Kirk

Winner: Kamuela Kirk def. Makwan Amirkhani via. unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)

Welterweight: Muslim Salikhov vs. Francisco Trinaldo

Round 1:

The explosive round saw both the fighters go toe-to-toe. But Salikhov was landing the cleaner kicks. His kicks were a massive weapon. He landed the side kick, front kick, teep kick and whatnot. Trinaldo the veteran did have a few strikes landed but they weren’t significant enough. Towards the end of the round, Salikhov scored a knockdown but was unable to secure the finish as the bell rang. 10-9 Salikhov

Round 2:

The second round was largely similar to the first. Both the fighters swung wildly, however Salikhov was slick and fast in his movement. There was no knockdown in this round, but Salikhov took the round comfortably. 10-9 Salikhov

Round 3:

There was a brief stoppage right at the beginning of the round, after an eye-poke from Trinaldo. Just when it seemed like the fight would be waved off, Salikhov decided to continue fighting. He was caught by a strong left from Trinaldo as soon as the fight resumed. But he recovered pretty quickly. Salikhov then landed a few strikes, before taking down Trinaldo towards the end. 10-9 Salikhov

Winner: Muslim Salikhov def. Francisco Trinaldo via. unanimous decision (30-27 x3)

Heavyweight: Tanner Boser vs. Ilir Latifi

Round 1:

The fight started pretty slowly. Both the fighters attempted to land a few strikes. The first real action came when Boser attempted a kick. Latifi caught Boser’s leg and took him down. He had a significant ground control time. Not much action after both the fighters got on their feet. 10-9 Latifi

Round 2:

There was not much action for the first half the second round. However, Boser then landed a crisp hook that had Latifi in pain, but Boser failed to secure the finish. Boser somehow saw off the barrage of strikes from Boser and survived. 10-9 Boser

Round 3:

Hardly 30 seconds into the final round, Latifi took down Boser and had him on the ground for the entire round. Massive ground control time. But the only thing he failed was to do some significant damage. 10-9 Latifi

Winner: Ilir Latifi def. Tanner Boser via. split decision
