“Gifted by the judges” – Valentina Shevchenko reveals why Amanda Nunes wouldn’t want a trilogy fight
Valentina Shevchenko vs Amanda Nunes
Valentina Shevchenko and Amanda Nunes are probably the most dominant women in the history of martial arts. While Shevchenko is tearing apart the UFC women’s flyweight division, Nunes has demolished each and every fighter from the women’s featherweight and bantamweight divisions.
Shevchenko recently defended her UFC women’s flyweight title for the sixth successive time after beating Lauren Murphy in the co-main event of UFC 266. She also became the first woman to knock Murphy out. Following her victory, talks of a trilogy fight against the ‘GOAT’ Amanda Nunes began.
In a recent interview with Ariel Helwani (MMA Hour), Valentina Shevchenko stated that her goal was to beat Nunes in the trilogy fight. She was quoted as saying, “This is my goal. I know that when we will have fight next time, I will be ready to do anything.” ‘Bullet Valentina’ went on to say that Nunes would definitely hesitate for a trilogy fight since she was “gifted the victory” at UFC 215.
“She doesn’t want this fight” – Valentina Shevchenko on Amanda Nunes
Speaking to Ariel Helwani, Shevchenko said, “I kind of feel that she’s doesn’t want too much this fight to happen. Because inside of herself, she feels that she was gifted the victory from our second fight. Gifted by the judges. She feels that she was beaten by the smaller girl from the smaller weight class and she is a bigger girl. It’s kind of like pressure on her from the inside.” [via MMA Fighting]
The first time Shevchenko and Nunes met, was at UFC 196. The Brazilian earned a unanimous decision victory. Shevchenko earned the right to rematch, a year later at UFC 215 in September 2017. The fight was unbelievably close, and in the end, Nunes came up trumps, with a split decision victory. Right from the post-fight interview that night, until today, Shevchenko has maintained that she was robbed.
