UFC Vegas 39: Chris Gutierrez beats Felipe Colares in a very close contest

The bantamweight contest between Felipe Colares (10-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC) and Chris Gutierrez (16-3-2 MMA, 4-1-1 UFC) kickstarted the main card of UFC Vegas 39. These two contenders fought their hearts off, and after three hard-fought rounds, Chris got the W.

Round 1 – Colares started the fight with a couple of head kicks, he kept Chris at bay but his opponent looked a little hesitant to engage. Corales stayed true to his kicks, and as soon as he started landing some of them he mixed in some punches. Corales moved forward and went for a takedown, it got stuffed, and Chris attempted a takedown of his round, but couldn’t complete it.

Round 2 – The pace of this fight was being dictated by the legs from Corales. He threw plenty of them but nothing significant landed. Chris was moving well and was looking for his counter shots, but nothing big landed from him as well. Corales managed to engage in a clinch just as the round was ending but Chris stuffed it.

Round 3 – Both these fighters looked extremely tired at the beginning of round number 3. Corales was still moving forward but his punches and kicks didn’t have any speed for power. After a lot of scrambles Corales finally managed to secure a takedown, another takedown from Chris and he managed to finish the round on top.

Result – Chris Gutierrez def. Felipe Colares via split decision
