Origin of the BMF title

BMF stands for Baddest Motherf**ker. Nate Diaz popularized the term in 2019. The term is eerily similar to the Baddest Man on the Planet, a nickname given to the world’s heavyweight champion. Diaz considered himself and his elder brother Nick as BMFs.

After defeating Anthony Pettis at UFC 241, Diaz called out Jorge Masvidal for the BMF title match. Dana White and the UFC got excited by the callout and booked the fight for UFC 244 in Madison Square Garden. Masvidal defeated Diaz after the doctor stopped the bout due to a cut on Diaz. Thus, Masvidal was crowned as the inagural BMF champion.
