Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs were at their dominant best in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder. They have started the series with an all-important road win.

In what was one of the best games of the playoffs so far, the Spurs handed the defending champions their first defeat in the playoffs this year as they secured a 122-115 victory at the Paycom Center. The game went to double overtime before the Spurs closed it out.

Wembanyama was unstoppable on both ends of the court on Monday night. The Spurs center recorded another double double in the playoffs as he ended his night with a game-high 41 points to go along with 24 rebounds and three blocks.

It was a game that pitted this season’s MVP candidates Victor Wembanyama and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander against one another. With SGA winning his second consecutive MVP, Wembanyama came into Game 1 with a point to prove.

The Frenchman has already established himself as the best two-way player in the league by a distance at the moment. He was a top-three candidate for league-MVP and won the first ever unanimous Defensive Player of the Year award.

In an enthralling contest from start to finish, everyone including SGA struggled to find their shots but Wembanyama stood above the rest in what was an all-round performance from him. There were doubts surrounding the Spurs due to their lack of experience in the playoffs, but the 22-year-old continues to stamp his authority in his playoffs debut.

The Spurs are coming off an impressive six-game series win over the Minnesota Timberwolves. Wemby was the difference maker in every series he has played so far and it may be the case once again against the Thunder.

Victor Wembanyama’s Game 1 performance puts the sports world on notice

Wembanyama continues to dazzle the NBA like no one else seen before. He put on a show for the NBA world and took over the game when it mattered the most in overtime.

The performance put in by Wembanyama in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals is bound to put everyone on notice, including the other personalities of sports world. Active and former stars like Trae Young, Manu Ginobili, Patrick Mahomes and several more were left amazed by what they had seen on Monday night from the French center.

It took a performance for the ages from Wembanyama to hand the Thunder their first defeat of the playoffs. But if the young star can continue to put in performances like this, he will definitely shift the tide of this series in the Spurs’ favor.

Victor Wembanyama joins another elite list after Game 1

Heading into his first postseason this year, questions were asked if he could handle the intensity and physicality shown in the playoffs. But he has more than just answered the questions. He has been dropping in historic and record-breaking performances and it was no different on Monday night against the Thunder.

Wembanyama became the seventh player in NBA history with a 40-20 game in the conference finals or later. He joined an elite list of players that includes Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Charles Barkley, Moses Malone, Elgin Baylor, Wilt Chamberlain and Shaquille O’Neal. He is the second ever from the list to have a 40-20 game in the playoffs aged 22 or below since Abdul-Jabbar in 1970.

There is still a long way to go in this series. It is hard to imagine that SGA will have another off-game in this series as he did in Game 1. The Thunder will do their best to bounce back in Game 2. But Wembanyama has shown that he is here to stay.
