The Minnesota Timberwolves, led by Anthony Edwards, have gone through some ups and downs over the last two weeks. After beating the Memphis Grizzlies on January 31, the two sides clashed once again on Monday night. However, this time the Grizzlies recorded a 137-128 victory over the Timberwolves at the FedExForum.

The loss on Monday put an end to the Wolves’ four-match winning streak. Prior to their winning streak, they had lost five games in a row, highlighting their indifferent form lately. The defeat dropped their record to 31-20 as they find themselves in fifth place in the Western Conference standings. Meanwhile, the Grizzlies saw their six-match losing streak come to an end. They remain out of the play-in spots with a 19-29 record.

Over the last few seasons, Anthony Edwards has emerged as one of the top players in the NBA. Taking advice from the great Michael Jordan during the offseason has paid dividends so far this season. The Wolves guard is currently averaging a career-high 29.7 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists. Known for never backing down and his competitiveness, Edwards has been labeled as the future “face of the NBA” by many.

That label was once reserved for former number two pick Ja Morant. After a promising start to his NBA career, the Grizzlies guard has seen his career spiral down due to his on and off-court problems. His explosiveness and athleticism made him a fan-favorite, and many believed that he was the future face of the league. But the young guard finds himself on the verge of being traded before the trade deadline/

The game on Monday was poised as a battle of young stars, with Edwards going head-to-head against Morant. But unfortunately, Morant was sidelined due to injury. Edwards may have been on the losing side, but he ended the game with a game-high 39 points to go along with seven rebounds and three assists.

At one point during the first quarter, Edwards hit a catch-and-shoot three-pointer. He turned towards Morant and yelled:

You can’t do that, Ja.

Morant has never been known to be a good three-point shooter. He is shooting at a career-low 23.5% from the three-point line this season, while Edwards has improved on his shooting and is shooting at 40.7% from beyond the arc.

Fans react to Anthony Edwards talking trash to Ja Morant

Edwards is known as one of the league’s most outspoken personalities. Following his trash-talk to Morant, fans were quick to react to the viral moment across social media.

It was all love in the end, though, between Edwards and Morant. The two were seen exchanging pleasantries at the end of the game.

Defeat to the Memphis Grizzlies was self-inflicted

Although Edwards’s trash-talk was noteworthy, the Grizzlies eventually had the last laugh. Despite not having their star guard, Jaren Jackson Jr. led the offensive charge with 30 points. He was closely supported by Ty Jerome (19 points) and Jaylen Wells (18 points).

While Edwards had support from Jaden McDaniels (29 points) and Donte DiVincenzo (21 points), it was their bench that came up short. They were outscored by the Grizzlies bench by 52-13. After the match, Edwards was asked if the loss was self-inflicted in his post-match interview.

Yeah, it’s definitely on us. We knew everything they were gonna do. They just played with a little better pace than us. They wanted it more tonight.

The two sides are scheduled to meet for the fourth and final time in the regular season on March 3, as the Grizzlies lead the head-to-head 2-1.
