The 2023 season was a year to remember for Viktor Hovland. The Norwegian golfer claimed three wins and was named the FedEx Cup champion. A month after his triumph at the East Lake Course, Hovland went on to win the Ryder Cup.
The year 2024 though was a one to forget for him. The 2024 season was probably one of the worst campaigns for him as he made just two top-10 finishes. Following his poor performances, he parted ways with his swing coach Joe Mayo for a second time. Ahead of the Dubai Desert Classic, he hilariously summed up his 2024 campaign and said “s*** happens”.
Hovland would change his golf swing during the 2024 season. In the press conference before the tournament, the 6-time PGA Tour winner admitted that he made a poor decision regarding this.
I think it’s just your golf swing is an ever-evolving organism, and every week you’re out here playing, you have intentions and feels that would seem relatively innocuous. But you keep those intentions and feels in there, and then might morph into something else. I just didn’t address it.
Viktor Hovland said as per PGA Tour.com
After parting with Mayo, Hovland is now working with coach T.J. Yeaton. At The Sentry, he was seen using his signature “double pump” swing, suggesting that he has gone back to his original swing.
Just to put it simply, I added a lot of draw pieces in my golf swing because I’d always been a cutter, and I wanted to see the ball not cut as much. And then you add more draw pieces in there, and then suddenly, I get sick and tired of it missing left and now I’ll want to cut it, and that compensation was not good for my swing. It’s just a process of, you know, s*** happens.
Viktor Hovland added
"Sh*t happens."

Hovland is currently playing while navigating a toe injury. Just like Scottie Scheffler, the World No.8 suffered a freak injury.
In an unexpected manner, Hovland would stab his toe against the bed frame. This resulted in him suffering a small fracture on his right foot. Despite this, he competed at The Sentry and finished T36, firing a score of 15-under par.
Viktor Hovland labels himself as “certified nuts” while making blunt admission regarding golf swing
Viktor Hovland changing his swing technique in 2024 led to a lot of debates among fans and experts on social media. Despite the swing working wonders for him, the golfer tried to change it. In the end, it did not bring him the results he expected. At the Dubai Desert Classic, he called him “certified nuts“.

After making a blunt admission regarding his golf swing, Hovland did add that he is starting to understand and appreciate what he did before. He pointed out that his previous swing looked a bit “goofy” to him.
I mean, I’m certified nuts… At least I have a way better understanding and appreciation for what I used to do.

In the first round of the Dubai Desert Classic, Hovland struggled once again. He fired a score of 75, 3-over par. At the front nine, he had a score of 40 as he made six bogeys during the round. He currently finds himself in the drop zone and faces the danger of not making the cut.
