India vs England 2021: Virat Kohli expresses surprise with Man of the Match and Man of the Series award decisions
Virat Kohli
India clinched victory in the third ODI against England in thrilling fashion as Sam Curran almost pulled off a jailbreak for the visitors. India had earlier put up 329 on the board thanks to brisk knocks from Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya. In reply, England’s chase proved to be going nowhere and it seemed like a matter of time before an Indian win was sealed.
However, Sam Curran had other ideas as he went after the Indian bowling and played sensibly by refusing singles and taking them only when necessary. It boiled down to the last over but T Natarajan held his nerve to seal a 7-run win for India. Curran was awarded the Man of the Match for his knock while Jonny Bairstow was given the Man of the Series despite England losing both the match and the series.
Virat Kohli surprised by decision to award Bairstow and Curran
Virat Kohli spoke at the post match presentation and expressed surprise with the decision. He said, “I’m surprised Shardul wasn’t the man of the match, and Bhuvi wasn’t the man of the series. A lot of credit to them for bowling so well in adverse conditions.”
He then spoke about the series win and said, “When the top-two battle each other, we’ll get exciting games. No one will throw in the towel, and Sam played a really good innings to keep them in the hunt. However, our bowlers picked up wickets, and it moved from us finishing it off to them getting over the line before Hardik and Nattu pulled it back. It’s most disappointing for the guy who drops the catch, but as much as you get disappointed, catches get put down and sometimes they cost you.”
Looking ahead, “This win has been sweet because it’s against the top team in the world, and we’re looking forward to the IPL. It’s been an amazing season, series, and this was a great way to finish it off. Scheduling needs to be looked at in future, since playing in bubbles will be difficult, and everyone can’t have the same mental capacity all the time, but I’m looking forward to the IPL for now,” Kohli signed off.
