Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has found himself under severe backlash. After making some controversial comments regarding his contract, he doubled down on them on Wednesday. Fans on social media were left baffled by these words from the Toronto Blue Jays superstar.

The 2026 season has not gone the way Guerrero Jr. and the Blue Jays would have hoped. Last year, they suffered a massive heartbreak as they blew a 3-0 lead in Game 7 of the World Series and lost the championship in front of their fans at Rogers Centre against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Blue Jays were 2 outs and inches away from winning their first World Series title since their back-to-back triumphs in 1992 and 1993. Given how they finished last season, there was some expectation of them being one of the top contenders once again.

However, the campaign has been one to forget for them. Guerrero Jr., who was one of the favorites to win the World Series MVP last year, finally hit his first home run at Rogers Centre this season last week. His struggles to hit home runs at home were turning into a big concern.

Recently, he had an interview in Spanish with Veronica Batista. During this, he opened up about the disappointing season and his huge 14-year, $500 million contract that he signed last year.

He went on to claim that the money the Blue Jays gave him was because of the work he had done. He also mentioned that he was not going to hit 40 home runs each year.

I want people to understand one thing. The money they gave me wasn’t for what I’m going to do. It was for what I already did. They didn’t pay me because I’m going to hit 40 every year.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. told Veronica Batista

This did not sit well with the fans. Many Blue Jays supporters called him out on social media.

Before the game on Wednesday against the Baltimore Orioles, Guerrero Jr. was asked about these comments. The 27-year-old stood by his words and claimed that he has no regrets about what he said.

No, I don’t regret myself. I’m not lying with what I say.

To make matters worse for the Blue Jays, they lost both games of the doubleheader and got swept. Their loss in the first game confirmed their elimination from the playoffs.

As per Keegan Matheson of MLB.com, Guerrero Jr. did express feeling bad for not being able to help the Blue Jays get to the postseason.

That was a quote from the interview when she asked me how I felt about this year. I said that, obviously, I feel really bad about the year that I had, that I couldn’t help my team get to the postseason.

So what happens from here on? The Blue Jays will finish their season at home against the Cincinnati Reds in a 3-game series. Guerrero Jr. might face some hostile reception following these comments from the home faithful.
