Andy Green will remain in the dugout of the New York Mets next season. On Tuesday, the National League East side removed the interim tag and named him the full-time manager. While lauding his efforts, General Manager David Stearns claimed that he was the “perfect person” for this job.

The 2026 season has been another one to forget for the Mets. After missing the playoffs last year on the final day of the regular season, they were expected to bounce back strongly this time out.

However, things did not go the way they planned. The Mets did not have a good start and found themselves struggling once again. In June, the team decided to part ways with Carlos Mendoza.

The Venezuelan international, who took over the job in November 2023, was fired at the halfway point of the season with a 34-47 record. With the team 14 games below .500 at that point, Green was named the interim manager for the remainder of the season.

Since then, Green has guided them to a 37-38 record but is 31-28 since the All-Star Break. This relative success has led to the Mets appointing him as the full-time manager on a 3-year deal.

In the press conference before the game against the Texas Rangers, GM David Stearns spoke highly of Green. He claimed that his experience in leading the clubhouse made him the right choice for this job.

I think Andy is the perfect person for this job. His experience both throughout his career in the game, his experience in our organization over the last three years, our relationship that we’ve developed, and his ability to lead our clubhouse, makes him the right choice.

In his first game after this announcement, the Mets won 6-3. With no playoffs this season for them, Green will have a huge task in his hands next year.

Since Green took over, he hasn’t been afraid to hold players accountable for their performances. This is one thing that has impressed Marcus Semien.

He’s a guy that is straight up with you. Whatever he sees, whatever he may be feeling, he communicates it in a way that you react to well, and you want to work hard for that guy.

Francisco Lindor, who is one of the clubhouse leaders, said it was a wise decision to hire him full-time and resonated with Semien’s comments.

He’s someone from day one said he would hold players accountable, so if he says something, for better or worse, you have to listen.

This is not the first time Green will be a full-time manager. Before joining the Mets in 2023 to lead their farm system, he managed the San Diego Padres from 2016 to 2019.

In his first season, the Padres finished 5th in the NL West division with a 68-94 record. He finished with a 71-91 record in 2017, 66-96 in 2018, and was 69-85 when he was fired in 2019. In 640 games, he finished with a 274-366 record.

With back-to-back disappointing seasons, the pressure will be on him to deliver in the 2027 season. For now, the Mets will hope to finish the season on a high with a few more wins.
