On Friday, the New York Mets finally decided to part ways with Carlos Mendoza. This development comes after the team got swept in the 4-game series against the Chicago Cubs and was left with a 34-47 record at the halfway stage of the season.
The pressure on Mendoza had been there since last season. Following the record-breaking signing of Juan Soto in December 2024, the team was viewed as one of the favorites for the World Series title.
Unfortunately for Mendoza, the team suffered a massive slump in the 2nd half of the season. They went on to miss the playoffs on the final day of the season after a 4-0 loss against the Miami Marlins.
Despite that, the team backed Mendoza. Earlier this year, the Mets crumbled again and lost 12 games in a row. This marked the first time since 2002 that the team had dropped 12 successive games.
The team was 11-21, 10 games behind the .500 mark after 32 games. Again, the team stuck with him as President of Baseball Operations, David Stearns claimed they did not view the situation as a manager problem.
However, the defeat on Thursday proved one too many for Mendoza. The Mets, who made 6 errors in the second game of the doubleheader on Wednesday, lost 4-3 in extra innings (while making 2 errors) and got swept in the 4-game series.
While speaking with the reporters, Mendoza sounded off on the defensive mistakes. He claimed that the team needed to make better defensive players.
On Friday, the National League East side fired Mendoza. In a statement on X, the team announced that Andy Green had been hired as the interim manager for the remainder of the season.

Mets fans react to team firing Carlos Mendoza
After too many poor results, the New York Mets finally decided to make a change in their managerial position. Following their 6th consecutive loss on Thursday, the team on Friday revealed that Carlos Mendoza had been relieved of his duties.

Mets fans on social media were left divided. While some celebrated this, some blasted David Stearns and expressed that it was more of his fault. One user on X wrote, “took long enough” to express their feelings while raising questions regarding Stearns.

Took long enough. Stearns tomorrow?

Mendoza was part of the problem. But he’s far from the only problem or even the biggest piece.

David Stearns built this train wreck. He needs to go next.
8 months too late

Now announce you wish Stearns best of luck on future endeavors
A CALENDAR YEAR LATE!!!!

David Stearns is an incompetent fool with a fake Harvard degree
nothing like firing him when the season has been over for 2 months! way to be proactive ☺️

The buck stops with him AND Stearns…One down!
— Joan DeLuisi Dante (@Joaniedee_44) June 26, 2026
Not all his fault but he clearly lost the team. Zero accountability. Should’ve happened months ago – but again – not all on him. Boy genius Stearns

Roster problems aside, he lost the clubhouse. Laziest, most uncaring team I’ve ever seen and he did nothing. Idc how much a player makes, Billy Martin would’ve ripped someone’s head off. 10 errors in 4 games isn’t just bad roster setup or guys out of position.

I am not a Mets fan, but it’s INSANE it took this long
— Myk (@mauleani) June 26, 2026
Right… because he's to blame for all the absolutely horrible roster decisions? The GM oughta be sent packing too.

Mendoza was named as the manager of the team in November 2023. He had previously worked as a coach across town for the New York Yankees.
Despite finishing 3rd in his first season in the NL East, the Mets were able to qualify for the playoffs. They eventually reached the National League Championship Series (NLCS), where they lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Last year, they finished 83-79 and missed the playoffs. Mendoza’s tenure with the Mets ends with a 206-199 record (.509). In the playoffs, he was 7-6.
David Stearns claims Mets were falling short following Carlos Mendoza’s departure
The New York Mets will now have Andy Green in the dugout as their interim manager after the team sacked Carlos Mendoza. Following his departure, David Stearns expressed that the team was falling short of its goals.

In the statement released by the team, Stearns thanked Mendoza for his contributions and wished him well.
Carlos’ impact on our players, staff, and culture over the last three seasons has been transformative. …Unfortunately, we know we are falling short, and change is necessary to move forward.

Meanwhile, team owner Steve Cohen claimed that the fans deserved better and that the season had been disappointing.
I want to express my deepest gratitude to Carlos Mendoza for his leadership and unwavering commitment. He represented this organization with integrity and dedication throughout, and I wish him and his family all the best. … There is no sugar coating it: this season has been a disappointment and our fans deserve better than what we’ve delivered.

The Mets are 13 games behind .500 after 81 games this season. Their next encounter sees them take on the Philadelphia Phillies.
Their NL East rivals also had a similar slump earlier this season, which led to them firing Rob Thomson. Since then, the team has turned its season around and is still in the race for the playoffs. It remains to be seen whether the Mets will have a similar impact following the exit of Mendoza.
