Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso was seen frustrated after the Q3 session of the Hungarian GP 2024. Alonso seemed angry at the FIA upon the Red Flag in the final minutes of the qualifying.
RB drivers Yuki Tsunoda and Sergio Perez brought up the Red flags, where Perez crashed at Turn 6 of the Hungaroring.

The Red Bull cars crashed, causing significant damage and prompting the stewards to call up the Red flags to prevent further crashes by other drivers. However, Fernando Alonso was ahead of the incident and about to finish his lap.

The Red Flag usually means that no driver can finish their laps, even if they are past the incident. This situation annoyed Alonso because he was quicker at the time of the incident. The two-time world champion believed that if the FIA had delayed the Red Flag for a few minutes, it could have potentially lifted him further up the grid.

Fernando Alonso threw his jacket and cap on the ground while talking to an FIA official during the weigh-ins. George Russell, who was passing by the weigh-ins, saw the argument between Alonso and the FIA and stopped to ask the Spaniard about the incident. Carrying this frustration, Alonso walked away to the Aston Martin garage.

Fernando Alonso claims FIA made a gross mistake over a Red Flag at inappropriate time

Fernando Alonso explained that the FIA sometimes makes good decisions and other times they’re just bad at it. He believed they made a big mistake at the Hungarian GP. Fernando Alonso was almost at the end of the lap and that was his quickest, he was about to finish the last corner , when the FIA put out the Red Flag. The Spaniard found this situation very frustrating and surprising. He felt they should have waited a little longer before stopping the session, this mistake affected his position in the race.

The truth is that the FIA sometimes gets it right and sometimes they make gross mistakes, today they have made one. They put out the red flag when I was in the last corner, which is surprising.
Fernando Alonso said, as reported by motorsport.com.

Alonso highlighted the accident at turn 5 and stated, usually in this kind of situation the race officials wait for all the cars to complete their laps. However, the stewards didn’t consider this rule and pulled the Red Flag way before each driver finished their laps. The Spaniard reckoned, the waiting period was an unwritten rule that everyone expects them to follow. It’s a common practice to allow drivers to finish their laps unless there’s an urgent need to stop the race immediately. However, they didn’t wait, which was unexpected and frustrating for Alonso, whose lap was affected.

There was an accident at turn eight [five]. Normally they always wait for the cars to complete the lap. It’s the ‘spoken norm’.
Fernando Alonso added.

Certainly, Fernando Alonso was frustrated by the decision stewards made. According to him it was clearly unfair because this could’ve made him start much forward on the grid. However, the Spaniard is set to start the race from the seventh position behind Ferrari at the Hungarian GP 2024.
