WATCH: “How the rivalry should be,” Mercedes’ fans wholesome reaction to being served a Red Bull by Max Verstappen fans wins the Internet
Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen post-Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2021
The relationship (if you can call it that) between the fandoms of Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton and by extension, of Red Bull and Mercedes is rather complicated. You can pretty much find both sides throwing expletives at each other in the replies of ESPN, WTF1 and really, any Formula 1 related tweet. You can trust them to be there and to be fighting.
The two fanbases rarely ever see eye to eye: Reactions and interactions ranged from guarded ‘discussions’ to outright hostility and trolling. It’s certainly not a pretty sight. It has a history behind it, of course, but the fanbases tend to exaggerate the differences between the two drivers. There is obviously animosity between the two factions, but the outright hostility seems to more be a feature of the fandoms.
The two main culprits in the rivalry are two races last year: Silverstone 2021, and Abu Dhabi 2021. Both do have reasons to feel hard-done-by, and to an extent, both arguments make some sense, but no side sees both arguments, it’s really just their own that they’re aware of. But there are times when this ‘rivalry’ can be mellow, or just poking fun at each other. Recently, a clip surfaced of one such incident.
Mercedes and Red Bull fans share a light moment
Recently, ESPN posted a video of a couple of fans in a bar. Fights would obviously not be expected, but you may expect at least some poking fun at each other or just ignorance. But what happened was actually quite nice.
In the video, a Verstappen fan walks across the floor to a table full of Mercedes fans and puts down a can of the eponymous drink, Red Bull. This is certainly a departure from what you would usually expect from the two fandoms, and one would obviously want to see this more than what takes place on social media, especially on Twitter.
The Mercedes fans also took it well, and laughed, with one fan raising his glass to the camera in respect or acknowledgement. No one outside of the two fandoms, and even in the fandoms themselves, likes to see the two at each other’s throats and moments like this are a step in the right direction.
