Qatari high jumper Mutaz Barshim will be going into the Tokyo Olympics looked upon as the gold medal favourite. The second highest jumper of all time will have his stage set to clinch his first Olympic gold medal.

The Asian record holder has had his set of ups and downs in the international athletics circuit. But the star has always bounced back stronger. In 2014, Barshim became the second-highest jumper of all time with his awe-striking jump of 2.43m at the Brussels Diamond League. Previously that year the icon along with Ukrainian Bohdan Bondarenko had made several attempts at the world record of 2.45m by Javier Sotomayer.

Mutaz Barshim stunned the world with his incredible gold-winning performance of 2.37m at the 2019 World Championships at his home ground in Doha. The world no. 3 became the first man to defend a world high jump title with his victory. He has previously placed 2nd and 3rd at the London and Rio Olympics respectively.

Qatari high jumper Mutaz Barshim married Alexandra Everett in 2018. The couple celebrated their wedding in Qatar and her home country, Sweden.

Alexandra was also an athlete competing in middle distances. In 2020, the pair welcomed baby boy Josef Essa Barshim. Although Mutaz Barshim is very active on social media, he has rarely shared anything about his personal life.
