The UFC’s BMF title was originally minted in 2019 when Jorge Masvidal went up against Nate Diaz at UFC 244. When it was all set and done, ‘Gamebred’ bagged the inaugural silver strap via TKO (doctor’s stoppage) in the night’s main event. Now, Max Holloway is slated to put his strap on the line against Dustin Poirier at UFC 318 in the Louisiana native’s swansong.

It is safe to say that a special title calls for special individuals to wrap the belt around the waist of the victor. In the past, the likes of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Masvidal himself, and even Mark Coleman have bagged that honor.

That begs the question: Who should do it this time around when two of the greatest ever collide for one last time? Former two-division champion and current PPV play-by-play broadcaster Daniel Cormier has some ideas. DC took to his YouTube channel and gave probable choices for both athletes.

If Lil Wayne is walking him [Dustin] out, Lil Wayne should walk out there and put the belt on Dustin Poirier, I think Lil Wayne should do it…[When coming to Holloway]…It’s kinda like personal because I watched the disappointment of the last fight [for Max] I’d let his wife do it because they’re so close. I would let Max’s wife do it because I saw how sad they were after the last fight. It’s not just Max fighting. It’s his entire team, his entire family. I would let his wife do it because of how much it means to the family, or I’d let his son do it.

Holloway had his wife, professional surfer Alessa Quizon, by his side when he captured the BMF title at the landmark UFC 300 event against Justin Gaethje. Sporting slicked-back hair “like John Wick,” as he joked during the post-fight press conference, Holloway credited Quizon for inspiring his warrior spirit and fueling his second career run at 155 pounds.

Their bond was just as visible during tougher moments. The couple shared an emotional scene after Holloway suffered his first career knockout loss to former featherweight champ and current 155lbs kingpin Ilia Topuria in the main event of UFC 308.

Cormier also referenced Holloway’s son Rush, an emotional chap who was once seen crying after his father’s loss inside the Octagon. A former champ and a visceral striker, the BMF challenge warrants similar contenders.

As for Poirier, ‘The Diamond’ told Full Violence that Lil Wayne would walk him out at UFC 318, either to some hybrid or to tunes attuned to his Willie Spence and ‘The Boss’ by James Brown theme. So it would make sense if he gets to wrap the belt around Poirier if he wins the bout. After all, Wayne and Poirier are native to Louisiana, where the PPV is set to take place.

Is there another option to hand over the BMF Belt at UFC 318?

Dustin Poirier has been through a who’s who of top talents at the 145 and 155-pound divisions in his tenure, and has the scars for it. Hence, UFC 318 means a lot as his last fight week and walkout. Poirier is willing to make one final walk in pure knuckleheaded fashion to face Holloway. The former 155-pound UFC interim champ is 2-0 in the equation, and if he can get one more over the gritty competition, he doesn’t see the BMF belt remaining in circulation.

Hall of Famer and “Godfather of Ground-and-Pound” Coleman made the walk to “My Hero” by Foo Fighters, with daughters Morgan and Kenzie. Given that he saved his parents from a house fire, and the Ohio legend even soon reverted to working out, people were elated that the legend presented the BMF belt last year.

This time, they want a recovering veteran to similarly present it for this trilogy affair. That would be ex-UFC fighter Ben Askren. ‘Funky’ was unresponsive due to a severe pneumonia from a previous case of staph. Askren was on life support for almost four days before finally receiving dual lung transplants. Now that he is recovering, fight fans want him to do the honors at the tail-end of UFC 318.

Moreover, the former ONE FC title holder literally beat death to survive and has released two separate videos on his socials after the surgical procedure. A legend, inside and outside the Octagon, seems to be the perfect candidate for such an honor. However, Askren is not expected to recover in time to attend the PPV, which will go down on July 19.
