Liam Lawson made his Formula One debut with AlphaTauri when he filled in for the injured Daniel Ricciardo during the Dutch GP weekend. He has been the substitute driver since and is expected to remain on the team till the Austin GP. Following his impressive performance for the Red Bull junior team, it has been rumored Willaims is looking to sign the Kiwi driver to replace struggling Logan Sargeant as the new teammate of Alex Albon.

Liam Lawson and Logan Sargeant were teammates during their F2 season. The New Zealand-born driver has already scored more points than the American despite being a substitute. Lawson scored his first F1 points last week at Singapore GP with a top-10 finish. The massive race finish and qualifying gap between Sargeant and Albon has been a talking point in the grid.

Following the summer break, most Formula 1 teams have settled on their driver lineups for the 2024 season. Nonetheless, there remains one seat at Williams. When asked about Liam Lawson’s performance, Williams team principal James Vowles acknowledged that Lawson had delivered an impressive performance. However, he did not provide any direct answer regarding whether Williams is considering Lawson for that seat.

So, he’s [ Lawson ]been impressive in the few races he’s had here. I think what we don’t have at the moment, with different cars, different situations at the moment, is knowing how they compare between a Williams and an AlphaTauri at this stage,“ said James Vowles, as reported by Skysports.com

Addressing the speculation about Red Bull potentially loaning Liam Lawson to Williams, Horner emphasized that Lawson is a member of the Redbull family. He also mentioned that there’s only one available seat; if Lawson doesn’t secure a Formula One seat for next year, there will be plenty of other opportunities and tasks for him to focus on.

We’ve got a luxury problem with three into two in that team, but there’s three great drivers and it’s a nice headache to have. But I think, if he’s not sitting in a grand prix seat next year, then he’s going to have plenty on his plate with other stuff to do,: concluded Horner.
