“Remain SILENT,” Russia offers ‘HUGE’ update on Brittney Griner
Brittney Griner
Brittney Griner is still in custody in Russia, where she is sentenced to a nine-year prison term, and the American government is still attempting to get her back. She is allegedly kept in slavery-like conditions at the penitentiary colony where she is currently confined. Now, the Kremlin has provided the most significant update so far on the Griner prisoner trade agreement.
Brittney Griner has spent the past ten months in captivity after cannabis oil was discovered in her luggage in February at a Moscow airport. In July, Brittney admitted to the narcotics charge and stated to the court she had no desire to break the law. She was sentenced to 9 years in prison. In order to swap Griner and Paul Whelan, a marine who has been stranded in Russia, the US officials proposed a potential prisoner exchange.
An update on the prisoner swap involving Paul Whelan and Brittney Griner was provided by a Kremlin representative, according to a recent report. The representative declined to provide a definitive comment when asked about whether the swap agreement had been completed. The spokesman for Russia said, “We do not comment and ask everyone to remain silent.”
Unfortunately, the Russian government has remained quiet about any inside information regarding the proceedings involving Griner’s prisoner exchange. The official stated once more that Russia would prefer that their American associates refrain from making public comments on the negotiations. As a result, the Kremlin has once more avoided commenting on the agreement as the current negotiations go through the appropriate procedures.
Brittney Griner’s condition is still in peril after 10 months
Griner was arrested by Russian authorities at Sheremetyevo International Airport in February, but she hasn’t yet returned home. The seven-time all-star was apprehended by Russian Customs while in possession of vape cartridges containing cannabis oil. One of the greatest WNBA players ever, she was awarded the defensive player of the year title twice and has also been selected as a seven-time all-star.
Griner was sentenced to nine years in jail in August after being found guilty of felony drug charges in Russia. The legal team representing Griner filed an appeal the following month, questioning the legitimacy of her nine-year sentence.
Even though she was completely warranted to a 10-year prison sentence, her counsel believed that she should have received a less severe punishment. In response, her defense counsel noted that convicted criminals in comparable circumstances across Russia had received low sentences, and in some cases, parole. Russian government spokespeople revealed that negotiations with the American administration for a prisoner exchange had progressed in August.
Griner, a 32-year-old standout player for the Phoenix Mercury, has two Olympic gold medals to her name. She has participated in WNBA off-season events since 2014 when she was a player for UMMC Ekaterinburg in Russia.
In July, the State Department suggested trading Brittney Griner and Paul Whelan, a veteran US Marine. Viktor Bout, a convicted Russian arms trader, was declared his freedom in return by the Biden administration. The breakdown of talks between the US and Russia appears to have been prompted by legal experts and hostage negotiators asserting that Russia is too busy causing disruption to engage in negotiations.
