How long Brittney Griner was in a Russian jail and what crime did she commit?

Brittney Griner
Brittney Griner is on her way back to the United States after suffering from extreme trauma, salvation and misery. The Phoenix Mercury star was allowed to be relinquished by Russian authorities in a one-on-one prisoner swap with the infamous arms dealer, Viktor Bout, distinguishingly known as the ‘Merchant of Death’.
For those unaware of this 32-year-old even landed in the foreign land, Griner was off to Russia for playing basketball post-WNBA season. However, little did she know that a small thing like a vape cartridge would turn her life upside down. Apparently, the cartridge contained hashish oil (derived from cannabis), which does not sit well with Russian law.
Brittney Griner was held up by the Russian authorities on February 17, when Moscow officials found cannabis oil in her luggage at the airport. Subsequently, Griner received a punishment of 9 years in a Russian prison on drug charges. However, the United States termed her imprisonment ‘unlawful’ and has been working on her release ever since.

Terrible times faced by Brittney Griner in the Russian penal colony

Russia has a strict policy against drugs without any exceptions whatsoever. Griner, unaware of this had to learn it in one of the harshest ways possible. With her stay past 290 days, it is safe to urge that the Russians officials surely knew their way around the obstruction of justice. She was being kept in Mordovia, a tow 210 miles from Moscow.
Following the tough times she faced in the Russian penal colony, Griner even reached out to President Joe Biden in a personal capacity through a hand-written letter, conveying her concerns and pleading for help. The U.S. Government had been publicly criticized for being unable to hasten up Griner’s release process.
Finally, after 10 months of diplomatic negotiations between the Russian and U.S. counterpart involved in this case, a deal was struck for Griner’s freedom in exchange for an ill-famed criminal; probably Russia’s intentions from Day 1, but who’s to say for sure.
The political faction aside, Griner will be back at home, between family and we hope that we’ll see her again in action in the WNBA.
