Dexter Lumis is a genius when it comes to character work. Lumis is often praised for his commitment to his characters. Dexter Lumis has been the perfect balance of dark and comedic acts. Lumis’ character work has been highly appreciated by the WWE Universe ever since his return.
In the NXT, he combined psychotic traits with genuine comedy and a dash of enticing romance. Lumis began his wrestling career in 2007. After completing his training with former WWF wrestler Mr. Hughes, Lumis made his wrestling debut in 2007 at the World League wrestling.
Dexter Lumis wrestled at numerous independent wrestling promotions before joining TNA in 2010. Vintage Wrestling and Florida Underground Wrestling are some of the promotions that Lumis was a part of before joining TNA. Lumis made his TNA debut in 2010 under the ring name Lupus.
However, he began wrestling under the ring name Sam Shaw and wrestled under that name until 2013. Thereafter, Lumis began wrestling under the name Samuel Shaw, which also happened to be his real name. He wrestled under the ring name Samuel Shaw until his departure from the TNA.
He made his WWE debut in 2019 on the NXT brand and wrestled for the brand until 2022. During his time at NXT, he was a member of the stable ‘The Way’, which included Johnny Gargano, Candice LeRae, Austin Theory, and Indi Hartwell. Since his WWE debut, he has been wrestling under the ring name Dexter Lumis. He was released from WWE in April 2022, after which he wrestled on the independent circuit. However, he returned to the WWE in August 2022, reprising his character from NXT. His first feud on the main roster was against The Miz.

Dexter Lumis revealed the origin of his WWE in ring name
In 2022, during an interview with MCW Backstage Pass, Dexter Lumis spoke about the origin of his WWE ring name. He stated that WWE asked him to pitch five names without including his real name in the list. Lumis said that he had mentioned Dexter Shawshank and Dexter Lumis in the list, and the writers liked Dexter Lumis.
He said that, Lumis being a play on Dr. Loomis from Halloween, Loomis was spelled Lumis for trademark reasons. He further said that he was a big fan of the horror genre, and Halloween happens to be his favorite movie from the 1970s and early 1980s. Lumis said that he picked Loomis from the movie Halloween and the first name Dexter from the crime drama series Dexter.
“It’s just, hey, you get an email and it’s like, hey pitch us five names……Lumis was a play on Dr. Loomis’ from Halloween, we just spelled it different for trademark reasons and whatnot…… Dr. Loomis, Sam Loomis, that was the guy who I sort of based that name on, and Dexter obviously being the famous TV show, the vigilante serial killer that kills bad people.”
Dexter Lumis was born in 1984 and graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2006. He worked as an illustrator at Universal Studios. Lumis also drew caricatures for the Riverside Arts Market and pictures of people’s pets on Christmas ornaments.
Dexter Lumis is very private regarding his personal life. He was rumored to be in a relationship with Indi Hartwell, as the two were an on-screen couple during their time in NXT. As a part of the storyline, the two even wed each other in the ring.
