Rey Mysterio is considered to be one of the biggest professional wrestlers to have ever stepped inside the squared circle. He made a name for himself, and the entire cruiserweight division, in a business which was dominated by the big, muscular giants. In fact, he is one of the few Superstars who are so iconic that they are recognized globally.
Mysterio’s career in professional wrestling kicked off at the early age of 14, on the independent circuit. He had stints with ECW and WCW, before being signed by WWE in 2002. Mysterio went on to win the Cruiserweight Championship thrice, World Heavyweight Championship twice, Intercontinental Championship and the United States Championship twice each, and also the WWE Championship once.
But these are just a few achievements from the ever-growing list. Even after being in the business for over three decades, the Master of 619 continues to perform with the same passion and dedication which he began with. But the high-flying Superstar recently had to take a week off from in-ring action due to his body being “banged up”.
Dave Meltzer recently reported, “Rey Mysterio was banged up from matches a few weeks back and had to take a week off but obviously returned the next week.” Fans might remember that Dominik and Rey Mysterio were a part of the RK-Bro-nament. The Mysterios were scheduled to collide against The Street Profits in the finals of the tournament but their match had to be postponed – owing to Rey’s burnout and Ford’s health issue.
Being “banged up” is justified, considering the decades through which Rey has put his body on the line. Many might think that there isn’t anything more left for Mysterio to achieve and it might be the right time for him to hang up his boots. But Mysterio soon returned from his off-time and was back to delivering high-flying performances – proving he still has a lot left in the tank!
What could be next for Rey Mysterio?
The Mysterios currently perform as a Tag Team on WWE. In fact, they have been the first-ever father-son duo to become the WWE Tag Team Champions. Mysterio’s focus has been to training his son to be a huge Superstar like him. But one storyline that the WWE Universe is eagerly waiting for requires them to break up.
Rey Mysterio vs Dom Mysterio is a dream feud. It could be a symbolic “passing the torch feud”. To add the stakes – it could involve Dom retiring his father and taking up his name and the iconic mask. But this feud might still be away from fruition as Dom is still rising up the ranks.
