Having lost to Miro at AEW Worlds End, Andrade El Idolo was believed to be done with the company. At the post-show media scrum, Tony Khan confirmed Andrade’s status and said that both parties have agreed to amicably part ways. With that being said, the 34-year-old was ushered into free agency as of midnight.
And if the rumors suggesting his WWE return weren’t enough, an update from PWInsider just cleared up the air. According to the outlet, Andrade is internally expected to return to WWE as soon as tonight. Even though he was advertised for a GCW event in 2024, El Idolo is no longer bound to appear. Back when he debuted in AEW, the fans expected him to be booked better than how he was presented on WWE’s main roster.
Despite becoming a one-time United States Champion in WWE, Andrade Cien Almas never got going. Being in NXT, the Mexican wrestler tasted pertinent success when he captured the NXT Championship under Triple H‘s supervision. His on-screen persona took a hit when he was promoted to the main roster. Vince McMahon and his creative team saw Andrade in a different light than Triple H.
Last year was a special one in Andrade’s personal life as he got married to 14-time Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair. Since then, even though they’ve worked for different companies, the couple has only grown in stature. A few months ago, there were a few rumors alluding to the fact that their relationship might be in danger. Neither of the two spoke on the matter; however, recently, that speculation was put to rest.
What could be Andrade’s role in WWE?
If the above report about Andrade is to be believed, he’s slated to show up on tonight’s edition of Raw: Day 1. The former NXT Champion could be brought in as one of the next challengers to Gunther‘s Intercontinental Championship.
There’s nothing concrete at the moment regarding Cien Almas’ creative plans. He just finished up with All Elite Wrestling and would be hoping to begin from scratch in WWE. However, with Vince McMahon’s fingerprints no longer affecting WWE’s creative, and Triple H being the driving force, there’s no reason for Andrade’s run to be unsuccessful this time around.
Some would feel he would’ve been a better fit for SmackDown with Zelina Vega and the rest of the LWO. That could still happen, as the Rey Mysterio-led group needs some backup following Santos Escobar’s betrayal.
