Last week’s SmackDown Fatal 5-Way match for the number one contender for Intercontinental Championship ended with both Sheamus and Drew McIntyre scoring pinfalls at the same time. After the controversial finish, both men were set to face off in a singles match on this week’s episode of SmackDown. The match was to finally determine an opponent for Gunther at WrestleMania.
Gunther and The Imperium were at ringside for the match, closely monitoring both men. The Ring General also joined in on the commentary during the match, expressing his views on both potential opponents for his IC title at the Grandest Stage of Them All.
The match was going back and forth as McIntyre and Sheamus were giving their all to earn a title shot at WrestleMania. But this week’s match to determine the challenger for Gunther also ended abruptly. When both men were down in the ring and it seemed the match could end in a draw, Gunther interfered in the match.
After distracting the ref, Gunther stood in the ring, demanding The Celtic Warrior and The Scottish Warrior get back on their feet. Just when both men got onto their feet, The Imperium launched an ambush from behind, ending the match without a result. These actions left the WWE Universe confused, with no opponent confirmed for his IC title at WrestleMania.
Just as The Imperium was leaving the arena, WWE official Adam Pearce showed up on the Titantron. Pearce condemned the faction’s actions. And he said that it has forced him to make the decision official that he will defend his Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania against Drew McIntyre and Sheamus in a triple-threat match.

Gunther shares his views on the Intercontinental Championship Triple Threat match at WrestleMania
The Triple Threat match for Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania was made official by Adam Pearce. Gunther was not too pleased with this decision. He expressed his frustration with Adam Pearce’s decision in a backstage interview after SmackDown.
Gunther said, “This place is a disgrace. That is just Adam Pearce covering up his own fault. That’s all it is. That’s why it’s a triple Threat Match and not a singles match how it should have been. But I’ll tell you this, I’ve beaten Sheamus before, twice. So, can I beat Drew McIntyre. And come WrestleMania they will understand what it means when we say the mat is sacred.”
WWE Universe is thrilled with this announcement. They will finally get to see three brutes going at each other with full force at the Showcase of Immortals. All three of them share a long and intense history together. Gunther is at a severe disadvantage in this match as he can lose the title without being pinned or submitting. This Triple Threat Match for Intercontinental Championship has the potential to be one the best matches at WrestleMania.
