One of the biggest trailblazers of the famed Japanese tradition of pro wrestling, Kazuchika Okada, will soon be a free bird. According to a report from Sports Illustrated, the 36-year-old will reach free agency at the end of January next year. Also, it’s being said that even though an obvious contract renewal from NJPW would be underway, Okada is seriously entertaining the opportunity to wrestle outside of his den.
Amidst the unbridled speculation of Okada’s potential switch to WWE, Raw Superstar Bronson Reed has done something that would only produce a tantalizing effect. He took to X and posted a picture with The Rainmaker from their match at the NJPW G1 Climax 2022 tournament. What’s more significant is that Reed actually beat Okada fair-and-square to score his biggest non-WWE win ever.
For those who haven’t tapped into it, WWE has had a chronic interest in Kazuchika Okada for years. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, there’s been a renewed interest in signing the Japanese Superstar to WWE. Moreover, it stems from the fact that The Rainmaker has a healthy relationship with Shinsuke Nakamura. And it could prove to be a major factor if WWE eventually ends up getting Okada.
The aforementioned report also added that Nakamura’s recent on-screen push is to eradicate the ill-famed stereotype that WWE treats their Japanese talent as afterthoughts. It was also relayed that WWE’s much-relaxed schedule would only align perfectly with the deteriorating physical repertoire of Kazuchika Okada. Though the 5-time IWGP Heavyweight Champion could also consider a move to AEW, things are hanging in balance as of now.
What will be Kazuchika Okada’s next match?
Back in October, on AEW Dynamite’s 212th episode, Kazuchika Okada joined forces with Orange Cassidy to take on Blackpool Combat Club’s Bryan Danielson and Claudio Castagnoli. Eventually, The American Dragon was able to make Okada tap out.
Next month, he challenged The Rainmaker to a singles match at Wrestle Kingdom 18. Their previous encounter took place at AEW x NJPW: Forbidden Door. In a match that felt a tad underwhelming, Bryan Danielson submitted Kazuchika Okada. The latter’s upcoming match with Danielson could very well be Okada’s last match in NJPW.
If he were to sign with WWE, it would make all the sense in the world to have him debut as a surprise entrant at next year’s Royal Rumble. For now, it’s not clear when Okada will be eligible to sign elsewhere after his deal with NJPW expires.
