Following his WWE release in 2016, Cody Rhodes continued reinventing himself on the independent circuit and in various promotions around the world. Cody signed with ROH in 2016 and quickly became a top star in the promotion. He won the ROH World Championship in 2017 and held it for 175 days. Rhodes competed for various independent promotions as well, including Global Force Wrestling, Pro Wrestling Guerrilla, etc. The American Nightmare has also been a part of numerous factions during his time away from the WWE.

During his time in NJPW, Cody Rhodes joined the Bullet Club stable in December 2016. Cody had a decent run with the faction, along with the likes of Kenny Omega, Luke Gallows, Karl Anderson, etc. However, he eventually ended up feuding with Omega following the implosion of Bullet Club in 2018. Rhodes was also one of the first wrestlers to be signed by AEW in 2019.

Ever since returning to WWE last year, Cody Rhodes has made it clear that he has only one goal in mind, i.e., the WWE Championship. However, his pectoral muscle injury at Hell in a Cell last year halted his momentum and kept him away from the squared circle for months.

At the Royal Rumble this year, The American Nightmare made his triumphant return, winning the men’s Rumble match after entering at number 30. Following his Rumble victory, Cody is set to headline WrestleMania for the first time in his WWE career. Rhodes will take on Roman Reigns for the undisputed WWE Universal title.

On his road to WrestleMania 39, Cody has constantly vowed to finish the story that his father started by capturing the Gold. Roman, on the other hand, has been a dominant champion for more than two years now. It remains to be seen whether Cody can achieve the American Dream by dethroning Reigns on the Grandest Stage.
