The second match of the night of Survivor Series was a battle of supremacy between The Miz and Gunther. Both men were on a mission to establish themselves as the greatest Intercontinental Champions of all time. After weeks of back-and-forth, the A-Lister finally got his hands on the Ring General. During the match, Gunther made a subtle reference to AEW superstar Chris Jericho.
The clash kicked off with The Miz taking control of the match. Initially, The Miz delivered a chop of his own and began targeting Gunther’s left knee. However, the 36-year-old wasted no time in turning things around and doled out a vicious big boot to the Miz. Interestingly, the Ring General retained his prestigious championship using the finishing maneuver of Chris Jericho.
In the midst of the match, Michael Cole noted that The Miz had the opportunity to tie Chris Jericho’s historic record. The latter has won the highest number of Intercontinental Championship in all of WWE. Jericho is a record-setting nine-time Intercontinental Champion. The Awesome One indeed put in a valiant effort to tie the record. Unfortunately, it was just not his day.
At one point, the 43-year-old had the entire WWE Universe believe that he would vanquish the Ring General. This was when the A-Lister exposed the turnbuckle and hit a low blow to Gunther. The latter, however, survived The Miz’s underhanded tactics. Gunther then ended the match using “Walls of Jericho or Liontamer,” rubbing salt on Miz and the WWE fans.
Top WWE superstars who could be next in line to challenge Gunther for the Intercontinental Championship
This Saturday, the A-Lister joined the list of superstars who failed to unseat Gunther. The Intercontinental Champion defended his prestigious title against the Miz at the Survivor Series. While the former pulled out all the stops to clinch the win, Gunther, however, subjugated the Miz. Now that the Ring General has taken out yet another opponent, it raises the question of who will challenge him next.
The 36-year-old hasn’t been pinned or submitted in a singles match since he joined the main roster. Thus, the superstars challenging Gunther should be someone who is a believable threat to his championship reign. Moreover, he is one of the top heels in WWE today. The champion, with his heelish antics, even made the crowd get behind the Miz. As a result, a top babyface superstar would be befitting to face Gunther next.
Speaking of babyfaces, the two names that come to everyone’s mind are Sami Zayn and Jey Uso. The two men are arguably the top babyfaces in WWE currently. Both of them culminated their feud with the Judgment Day at the same PLE. Thus, they can now direct their focus on the singles division. Both Zayn and Uso were in the tag-team division previously. After breaking away from their teammates, they are building up their WWE careers as singles stars.
Moreover, the two superstars came incredibly close to dethroning the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion, Roman Reigns. As a result, either of them will be believable opponents against Gunther. It will be interesting to see whether WWE sets up a program involving Gunther against either of the two men.
