Impact Wrestling star, Matt Cardona has completely changed his career trajectory for the better. The former Zack Ryder in WWE was known for his silly and goofy personality. However, now Cardona shifted his character to a more serious one which has worked wonders for his independent career. Nonetheless, the former Impact Digital Media champion still wanted his old name for a very specific reason but failed to get it.

In his recent appearance on Pro Wrestling Boom Podcast with Jason Powell, the former WWE superstar revealed why he had to back out from his claim. Matt Cardona commented about the WWE’s hold on the Zack Ryder trademark saying, “They did let it lapse. I applied for it knowing there’s a chance they could fight it and they have so that’s it, I’m letting it go… I’m not gonna fight — because at the end of the day, it’s their intellectual property. They would win if we ever went to court over it so I tried, they fought it so that’s it, I’m backing down.” (h/t Post Wrestling)

Cardona further elaborated on what he intended to do if he had got the right to use the ‘Zack Ryder’ name. While declaring that the former character is dead, Cardona said that he still wanted the name to do a Matt Cardona vs Zack Ryder cinematic match. He wanted the trademark to release a two-pack of both of his characters at his own toy company Major Bendies. The former WWE Intercontinental champion had huge gratitude towards his former gimmick but he said that it would never come back.

It is very much known to everyone that Matt Cardona and Chelsea Green are a married couple. The two shared awesome chemistry on-screen as well. However, currently, both of them are working for different promotions. The former Impact Knockouts champion made her return to WWE at the 2023 women’s Royal Rumble match. This was a very short-lived run though as she was eliminated in just five seconds by Rhea Ripley.

Matt Cardona reacted to her wife’s unwanted record in the podcast. He said, “I thought it was absolutely amazing because I knew everybody was gonna be talking about this and then the fact she set a new record. In her first day back, she’s already setting records. I’m so proud of her. But this is great. What was gonna happen? She flies in there, does a couple moves, in there for five minutes then gets thrown out? No one’s gonna remember that. But this is memorable and a perfect way to re-debut.”

Chelsea Green is currently drafted to the Raw brand. It would be interesting to see if her husband also makes the jump over to WWE. Cardona has already made it clear that he would never return to the promotion as Zack Ryder. Hence, the WWE Universe might get to see a new side of a familiar face if he ever returns.
