WWE released a bunch of talent over the last week, but the name that stood out was Matt Riddle. The reason behind his firing is entirely different from those who were released as part of the post-UFC-WWE merger budget cuts. According to recent reports, WWE management didn’t have any animosity against Riddle as much as they have towards CM Punk.

Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer discussed the possibility of either CM Punk or Matt Riddle returning to WWE. The former was terminated from AEW earlier this month following his altercation with Jack Perry at All In, London. Punk’s release from the Jacksonville-based promotion has created a buzz in the wrestling community.

“There’s a lot of people with bad feelings in management about CM Punk in WWE, but there’s nobody in management with a bad feeling about Matt Riddle,” said Meltzer. He revealed that WWE higher-ups are not as eager to rehire CM Punk as they are to bring back Matt Riddle.

It seems Riddle maintained a good relationship with the higher-ups. On the other hand, there were lingering tensions between Punk and the management. Unfortunately, WWE had to release The Original Bro, possibly due to his history of controversies.

CM Punk walked out of WWE following the 2014 Royal Rumble due to creative and health-related issues. Later in the same year, in June, WWE fired him. On the other hand, Riddle was also sacked by the Stamford-based promotion following his recent controversial incident at the JFK Airport, New York.

On the latest edition of Busted Open Radio via Wrestling Inc., Bully Ray expressed his opinion on whether Impact Wrestling should take Punk or not. “1000% I’d hire him, I think Punk needs to be in an environment that he is completely comfortable in and I know for a fact he was not completely comfortable in the WWE and then whatever went down in AEW, said the veteran.

Nash further noted that the Second City Saint has a congenial relationship with everyone on Impact. Despite the interest in Impact signing a deal with Punk, the promotion may not be able to afford CM Punk.
