“It was kind of a shock,” Mercedes Mone reflects on her awe-inspiring NJPW debut

Sasha Banks was always confident about retaining her megastar stature outside of WWE as well. However, she had doubts about how long it will take for her to get over in Japan.

Mercedes Mone made her NJPW debut earlier this month at Wrestle Kingdom 17 event. Upon getting conscious of her presence, the Tokyo Dome came to life. Without wasting much time, then Sasha Banks confronted the IWGP Women’s Champion KAIRI. After an intense staredown, Banks threw a challenge at KAIRI for the title, which she accepted.

Later on, the match was made official. On February 18th, Mone will claim her stake at the IWGP Women’s Title at NJPW: Battle in the Valley event. Owing to the massive star power of The Blueprint, the designated arena sold-out, shortly after Mercedes was added to the show. It’s baffling enough to even think of such movement for a B-level NJPW pay-per-view.

Apart from this, Mone coming on-board enabled NJPW to gain over 80,000 new subscribers on their YouTube Channel. At a glance, The CEO of NJPW’s Women’s division did bonkers for the Antonio Inoki founded promotion from a business standpoint. Citing the unbelievable response she received following her debut, Mercedes Mone recapped the whole story in an interview with NJPW.

“Personally, I always knew I was going to make an impact here. But it’s cool to see how quick it was, the turnaround to go from another name and character I’ve done for ten years to now be Mercedes Moné, and to see that instantly trend… just people obviously caring and wanting to see my match with KAIRI was cool. For it to sell out with that match being the only thing announced at that time was amazing. I know my fans always love and support me, so I knew it was going to do well, but it was kind of a shock to see how quickly it went that well.”

The multi-time WWE Women’s Champion defines pure class. She’s someone who’ll never forget the place which rose her to prominence. Hours before arriving in NJPW, Mone separately acknowledged Vince McMahon, Triple H and William Regal on Twitter. Needless to say, all those men had defining roles in shaping up her WWE career.

So being said, her fierce rivalry with Charlotte Flair over the Raw Women’s Championship is something which can’t be forgotten. Those women kept everyone glued to their television screens for months. Be it an IronMan match, first ever Hell in a Cell match featuring women, Banks and Flair should be held accountable for creating history.

Outside of that, she alongside Bianca Belair main-evented WrestleMania 37. In doing so, they engraved their names in history books for becoming the first two black women headlining WWE’s biggest show. Not only this, Sasha Banks aka Mercedes Mone is responsible for producing some of the greatest moments in WWE history.
