The dubious yet unprecedented conclusion to this week’s SmackDown will take some time to sink in. Cody Rhodes was expected to officially announce Roman Reigns as his WrestleMania opponent, and he took some strides in that direction too. However, in hindsight, it was a red herring. Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson entered the arena, and of course, it popped the crowd.

The Great One’s entrance ironically relegated Cody Rhodes on his way out of the ring. And then, Rock went face-to-face with his cousin, Roman Reigns. They received quite a dichotomous reaction from the folks in there as compared to what’s happening online. WWE’s upload of Rock snubbing Cody to confront Reigns has well over 60% dislikes on YouTube. The numbers are changing every second, but as of writing, the said video had 22,918 dislikes as opposed to nearly 10,500 people who liked it.

That figure is almost 70-30 in favor of the fans who were not thrilled. Apart from that, X, formerly Twitter, is replete with expletive rants against Dwayne Johnson. And that’s because he virtually usurped Cody Rhodes’ main event spot at WrestleMania. The entire wrestling fraternity seems upset over the mere thought of Rhodes’ story fizzling out completely at some point.

Of course, arguments can be made that The American Nightmare will eventually dethrone Roman. However, the arising concerns underscore Cody’s motivation behind handing The Rock the right to face Reigns, something that Rhodes was hellbent on getting for the past year. WWE will also stage a media event in Las Vegas this Thursday, and it looks tailor-made for a potential announcement.

What will be Cody Rhodes’ WrestleMania fate?

For those who think it’s over for Cody, maybe it’s not. But it sure as hell is going to be a long shot before he recaptures the imagination of the fanbase that was left disgruntled last night. The only option left for him is to ask Seth Rollins to better be ready for WrestleMania.

As noted, this week on Raw, they had quite an exchange. Rollins told Rhodes why he’s making a mistake if he proceeded to challenge Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.

The Visionary called Roman’s title a Hollywood one and wondered if Cody wanted to carry that baggage on his shoulders. Rollins blew some big trumpets for the gold he wears around his waist. It all makes sense now. Maybe it was set up to have Rhodes vs. Rollins at this year’s WrestleMania.
