Even after dedicating a couple of decades to WWE, Randy Orton has not taken a simpler route. Ever since his earth-shattering return at Survivor Series: WarGames, The Viper’s been a mainstay for the company. As much as the fans are grateful to see him perform at the highest level despite being in his mid-40s, Orton recently gave them another reason to cherish.
Last night, the 14-time World Champion wrestled Dominik Mysterio at a WWE live event in Washington. After putting Dirty Dom’s shoulders on the mat for a three-count, The Apex Predator earned his first one-on-one victory on a house show in 1455 days. It’s interesting to note that Dominik was Orton’s first singles opponent after the WWE legend came back from a career-threatening back injury. And without breaking a sweat, Randy was able to put Mysterio away.
It was The Viper’s only match on Raw this year, as he was signed to a SmackDown-exclusive contract the same week by Nick Aldis. And ever since taking over the main event picture on the blue brand, the fans have been clamoring for The Legend Killer to eventually dethrone Roman Reigns for the title. However, his ambitions took a massive hit this week.
In a triple-threat match to determine The Tribal Chief’s next challenger for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship, Orton was hoping to get the job done. However, just when he RKOed AJ Styles and was about to pin him, The Bloodline emerged on the scene and ruined everything. It forced SmackDown GM Nick Aldis to put Roman Reigns’ title on the line in a fatal 4-way match at the Royal Rumble.
Could Randy Orton become a 15-time World Champion at Royal Rumble?
Shortly after the carnage that headlined a newsworthy SmackDown, it was made official. Roman Reigns will defend his Undisputed WWE Universal title against Randy Orton, LA Knight, and AJ Styles on January 27 at the Royal Rumble.
That would be Reigns’ first multi-man match since WrestleMania 37, where he beat Edge and Daniel Bryan. In a match like that, Roman does not need to be pinned or submitted to lose his gold. It may lead to a new champion very soon.
If either of the three men, apart from Roman Reigns, manages to carve out a pinfall or tap one out, it would be a sight to behold. The Head of the Table has been the champion for well over 1200 days, and his paltry working schedule makes it almost impossible for him to lose it. If Randy does the trick in St. Petersburg, it would take him a step above Triple H, the 14-time World Champion.
