The deal between WWE and UFC is meant to bring success to both sports behemoths. Last year, TKO Holdings was formed as a result of Endeavor’s takeover; since then, mentions of the WWE-UFC merger have happened on respective promotions. And now TKO has reached a point where crossovers have begun, with WWE megastar Rey Mysterio making a surprise appearance at UFC Mexico City.

Mysterio’s presence could have been any normal appearance, but the WWE-UFC merger makes it more special. Not only the crossover but also the venue, Arena CDMX, in Mexico City, offered the Luchador a massive pop due to his Mexican roots. This was the UFC’s sixth overall visit to Mexico City since 2019.

Mysterio was seen having a great time when the focus shifted on him during the show. He was holding a glass half-filled with beer and threw up his other hand as a gesture for the audience, who cheered for him. The Hall of Famer’s appearance at UFC Fight Night was the third notable example of a WWE-UFC crossover.

The first instance happened on the February 19, 2024, episode of Raw, in Anaheim, where Michael Chandler appeared. He sat by the ringside and even took the microphone in his hands, which put the world on notice. Chandler called out Conor McGregor and challenged him for a fight inside the octagon. It is most likely that The Notorious Fighter will battle Chandler on June 29 in Las Vegas this year.

Rey Mysterio’s mention on SmackDown hints at his return

The February 23, 2024, episode of SmackDown was pre-taped last Friday due to their trip to Perth. However, the show worked out well for a build towards the Elimination Chamber and future storylines. Going nearly 30 minutes into the show, a backstage moment saw Legado del Fantasmo’s Elektra Lopez walk up to LWO’s Joaquin Wilde and Cruz Del Toro to state that the babyface faction is dead.

Lopez brought up the presence of LWO‘s leader, Rey Mysterio, and how they have benefited after following him. Elektra clarified that they are lost, and it is just the consequence of being in LWO. This Mysterio mention not only boiled up the factions’ rivalry but also hinted at his comeback.

It has been three months since The Master of The 619 was part of WWE programming. Santos Escobar’s attack has taken him away from SmackDown and given away their potential WrestleMania 40 plans. It is rumored that, upon Mysterio’s return, he would defend his stable, LWO, from the budding Legado Del Fantasmo. The path for that will see him battle his protege, Escobar, at The Grandest Stage of Them All.
